Design Challenges and Concept for Intergenerational Online Learning Verena Fuchsberger, Julia Nebauer, Christiane Moser, Manfred Tscheligi HCI & Usability Unit, ICT&S Center, University of Salzburg Sigmund-Haffner Gasse 18 5020 Salzburg, Austria IDC '12 Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Interaction Design and Children 1

Outline INTRODUCTION BACKGROUND DESIGN CHALLENGES “VISIT THE MUSEUM”: A DESIGN CONCEPT FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING FUTURE WORK 2

INTRODUCTION Education through the Internet provides many possibilities for children to engage in learning Two research questions Children’s and grandparents’ preferences and needs Derive design challenges Discuss those at the end of this paper on basis of our design concept. 3

BACKGROUND(1/2) Children’s Preferences and Needs – Constructivist Learning Theory – Narrative Content and Multimedia – Simplicity – Collaboration 4

BACKGROUND(2/2) Grandparents’ Preferences and Needs – Variety – Self-Made Tasks – Keeping up the Interaction – Mental Challenges 5

DESIGN CHALLENGES Knowledge Construction Personal Engagement Storytelling and Attracting Attention Collaboration 6

“VISIT THE MUSEUM”: A DESIGN CONCEPT FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING(1/6) Provides an online learning environment The activity is easy to use and understand Focus on collaboration 7

“VISIT THE MUSEUM”: A DESIGN CONCEPT FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING(2/6) Provide a variety of themes and topics, from real paintings and sculptures to school related content. Grandparents could for example decide, which departments they would like to explore with their grandchildren 8

“VISIT THE MUSEUM”: A DESIGN CONCEPT FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING(3/6) To solve riddles in the different departments 9

“VISIT THE MUSEUM”: A DESIGN CONCEPT FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING(4/6) Maintaining the children’s attention and provides hints for the grandparents to keep up the interaction. 10

“VISIT THE MUSEUM”: A DESIGN CONCEPT FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING(5/6) The use of animations is very closely connected to a narrative content Experiment and get amusing solutions, also in case of mistakes. Grandparents may get a recap of their general knowledge and they can assist the children in solving the riddles 11

“VISIT THE MUSEUM”: A DESIGN CONCEPT FOR INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING(6/6) Provides space to explore, understand and make mistakes. Narrative elements and animations, which are believed to contribute to learning. Provides a variety of themes and topics The activity supports them in keeping up the interaction, and seeks to challenge both involved parties mentally. 12

FUTURE WORK Will be implemented on an intergenerational online platform and evaluated afterwards. Convinced to meet the primary needs of both parties and correspond to their preferences to create a successful online learning environment. 13
