2 Context and characteristics A demand-led initiative… Collaborative and inter-disciplinary, drawing on strengths from HEIs across Scotland… Focused on new, relevant research and improving knowledge exchange to facilitate evidence-based contributions to policing policy and practice …

3 SIPR … A strategic collaboration between 12 of Scotland's universities and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) with investment from ACPOS, the Scottish Funding Council, and universities Strategic aims To undertake high quality, independent research of relevance to policing in Scotland; To engage in knowledge exchange so that research provides a robust evidence base to inform policing policy and practice; To develop policing research capacity in Scotland

4 Research and Knowledge Exchange: the interplay between the local and the global Scotland needs a strong policing research base to generate new knowledge and understanding of ‘what works’ in policing…. In an era of globalisation Scotland also needs a strong research base in policing in order to interpret knowledge about policing created elsewhere…

6 Building on excellence in Evidence & Investigation Lectureships in forensic science (forensic toxicology) and psychology (investigative interviewing); Post-doctoral research on the quality of eyewitness evidence from vulnerable witnesses. PhD studentships: Intelligence interface between police and community partners; Construction of facial composites by people with learning disabilities; Integration of investigation and forensic science in volume crime
