2 PURPOSE w Standardize clinical learning w Maximize clinical learning w Standardize clinical evaluation consistency equity fairness

3 CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR EDUCATOR (CIE) w ATC or Physician w Attends CIE Seminar w Minimum 3 years of work experience w Assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating a clinical education program

4 APPROVED CLINCIAL INSTRUCTOR (ACI) w ATC w Minimum 1 year of work experience w Completed ACI training w Provides formal instruction and evaluation of clinical proficiencies w Provides direct supervision of students

5 CLINICAL INSTRUCTOR (CI) w ATC or other healthcare professional w Minimum 1 year of work experience w Teaches, evaluates, and supervises students in field experiences w NO formal evaluation of clinical proficiencies

6 ATHLETIC TRAINING STUDENT (ATS) w Student enrolled in a CAAHEP accredited entry-level Athletic Training Education Program

7 CLINICAL EDUCATION w Students’ formal acquisition, practice, and evaluation of clinical proficiencies w Concurrent clinical education minimum period of 2 academic years associated with academic credit requires a syllabus

8 CLINICAL EDUCATION cont. w Direct supervision from an ACI classroom laboratory clinical education experiences w Supervision from a CI field experiences

9 CLINICAL EDUCATION EXPERIENCE w Integration of the following skills: psychomotor skills cognitive skills affective skills clinical proficiency skills w Occurs under the direct supervision of an ACI

10 DIRECT SUPERVISION w Formal instruction and evaluation of clinical proficiencies by an ACI w Constant visual and auditory interaction between the ACI and ATS w ACI is physically present

11 FIELD EXPERIENCE w Informal learning w Practice clinical proficiencies under the supervision of an ACI or a CI w Exposure requirements upper extremity lower extremity equipment intensive general medical

12 SUPERVISION w An ACI or a CI plans, advises, and evaluates the ATS in field experiences w Daily personal or verbal contact between the ACI/CI and ATS

13 FIRST RESPONDER w An ATS certified in first aid and CPR w Assistance is readily accessible by telephone or walkie-talkie w Assistance provided by ATC or EMS w NOT a component of clinical education

14 CLINICAL SETTING w Clinical environment where health care services are provided w Primary settings athletic training facilities athletic practices competitive events w Secondary settings

15 EDUCATIONAL COMPETENCIES w Educational content required of entry-level Athletic Training Education Programs

16 CLINICAL PROFICIENCIES w Clinical skills that entry-level athletic trainers should possess w Qualitative assessment of clinical education

17 THE ROLE OF THE ACI w “Guide by the Side” w Clinical education objectives emphasize: clinical judgement critical thinking planning and carrying out treatments communication skills w Role model
