Fit for the Future: The journey so far Fit for the Future launch The Premier announces the Fit for the Future reform program JO Pilot EOI Expressions of interest are called for JO Pilots and five pilot regions are selected.. Assessment Panel The Independent Assessment Panel is appointed and consultation begins on assessment methodology Templates Template 1 and 2 are released. Councils start preparing their proposals Jan – Mar 2015 Sept– Dec 2014 Today JO Pilots commence The five pilot regions establish organisational models and identify regional priorities Rural Council workshops A series of workshops are held with smaller councils to help refine Rural Council options.. Template 3 Template 3 is released. Councils consider the Rural Council options at a series of regional workshops Reviews Reviews into rating and regulatory burden on councils commence NSW Election The Government is returned to office and reaffirms its commitment to local government reform FFTF Proposals Councils begin to finalise their FFTF proposals. JO Model JO model begins to emerge, Pilots continue to work on key issues. Local Government Act Preliminary work starts on the Local Government Act revision

Key reform directions for regional NSW Strengthen regions Establish strong networks of Joint Organisations, connected to State government and focused on growth, and regional capacity building Strengthen councils Improve sustainability and encourage councils to increase their scale and capacity through voluntary merger where appropriate Increase support Provide more options for small rural councils. Support innovation through a $4m fund. Review FAGs distribution models
