1. Carbon Footprint Reduction Homework Part of the Park Ecovillage Trust project in conjunction with the Climate Challenge Fund

2. Why are we doing this? Almost everything we do uses energy. We need it for lights, cooking, hot water, heating, transport etc. We need it to make goods like TV’s, DVD’s, games consoles, mobiles, computers, clothes. We need it to produce the packaging that our food and other goods come in.

3. Where does most of this energy come from? We use fossil fuels - coal, oil and gas to supply a lot of the energy we need as well as to produce many of the materials we use to make things.

4. Why is that a problem? Fossil fuels create pollution. Some of this pollution is in the form of carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming and climate change.

5. A Carbon Footprint is a measure of how much carbon dioxide you add to the atmosphere by the things you do.

6. Homework Project The aim of this homework is to help you, your family and your school reduce your carbon footprint. It has simple activities that you can do to help you do this. The homework will be given out over a 4 week period.

8. What do you have to do? The homework is a simple survey for you to fill in. Then you need to enter your results onto an online carbon calculator. It asks you and your family to carry out a few simple tasks at home and record if you did it or not. These tasks will help you be more environmentally friendly.

9. For example Week One: You are asked to turn down the thermostat on the heating by 1 degree. Please tick Yes, if this happened or No, it stayed the same.

11. What will the homework help you do? Each of the tasks helps you use less energy. Therefore you will reduce your carbon footprint and you will save money on bills as well.
