6 Information Technology Professionals  Information Technology = Refers to all aspects of managing and processing information using computers and computer networks.  Professional = exhibits a courteous, conscientious and generally businesslike manner in the workplace; following a line of conduct as though it were a profession.

7 Information Technology Careers  IT Departments are in many companies large and small. (Greif Corporation, SW Landmark)  Do you know anyone in an IT Career? Company?  IT is a career with many open positions even in a down economy like now. Why?  Computers are the new blast furnaces….

8 12 Information Technology Careers  Web Site Designer  Web Application Developer  Web Site Managers  Web Site Analysts  Web Architect  Database Administrators - DBA  Server Administrators  Network Engineers  Security Managers  PC Repair Technician  Help Desk Technician  CIO – Chief Information Officer

9 IT Careers Notes  Pick a card from the helmet – Using the card you have go online and search the career you have been given.  Write down in 1 or 2 sentences some information about that career on the back of the card you were given.  We will share with the class and cover all of them between everybody.  Write down the notes colored in gold on your sheets relating to that career.

10 Web Site Designer  Responsible for the organization and appearance of a web site. (Front End)

11 Web Application Developer  Develops primarily server side applications.  Build and test web pages and hyperlinks.  Usually proficient in programming languages such as java and CSS. (Back End)

12 Web Site Managers  Manages all the members of a web development team.  In small companies, may actually perform all of the roles by themselves.

13 Web Site Analysts  Analyzes web site statistics to determine its effectiveness.  Develop strategies to drive traffic to a site.

14 Web Architect  Responsible for creating the overview plan of web sites development.  Usually manage the designer and developers.  They are the middleman between designers and Web Site Manager.  Good project managers.

15 Database Administrators  Responsible for maintenance and security of an organizations database resources and data.

16 Server Administrators  Manages and maintains network servers.

17 Network Engineers  Manages and maintains network infrastructure.

18 Security Managers  Manages the security measures used to protect electronic data.

19 PC Repair Technician  Installs, modifies and repairs personal computer hardware components.

20 Help Desk Technician  Diagnoses and resolves users technical hardware and software problems.

21 CIO – Chief Information Officer  The top position in a company regarding information technology.

22 The Future of Information Technology Careers  Currently a pyramid model - Many entry-level positions and fewer positions as you move towards the top. (The World is Flat)

23 The Future of Information Technology Careers  It will move to a diamond shaped model – Few entry- level due to outsourcing, many mid-level and few high-level positions.

24 Skills Needed to be a successful IT Professional  IBeam Solutions CEO Eric Schmidt says:  More soft skills vs just technical skills.  Ability to plan project, including estimating costs and budgeting money.  Writing skills to complete reports and give direction to team members.  Ability to work with vendors to obtain cost and time estimates.

25 IT professionals will need to have  General business knowledge – how business works.  Negotiating skills  Intercultural skills (Use common greetings and common sense)  Project management skills  The ability to make informed decisions and fulfill commitments.  Good listening skills (Seek first to understand then to be understood. This means listen before you talk.)
