Symbolism Act One

Definition: Symbol—something that represents something else: especially an object representing an abstraction. A Rose = Love Symbolism—the artistic method of revealing ideas or truths through the use of symbols.

Miller makes heavy use of symbolism throughout Death of a Salesman. Symbols can be props, part of the setting or something contained in the dialogue. Objects only become symbols when they are frequently used, referred to in detail or have significant importance. The Elm Trees that used to be in the back yard are an example of symbolism.

The Elm Trees p 6: ‘Remember those two beautiful elm trees out there?’ p16: ‘Biff, up in Albany I saw a beautiful hammock. I think I’ll buy it next trip, and we’ll hang it right between those two elms.’

Significance: What might the Elm trees represent? For Willy, the elm trees are a part of his idealised view / memory of the past. In this instance, Willy laments the way things have changed so much between the past and the present. Willy remembers the past so much because it represents a happier, more successful time for him; Biff and he doing things together, the neighbourhood not being so crowded, he believed himself to be more successful…

Other Symbols in Act 1 Silk-stockings Ceiling Chevrolet Refrigerator Flute Cards Suitcases Rubber tubing

Task: In pairs: Complete the Symbolism chart with 6 symbols for Act One. Extension: Write a paragraph that explains how Miller’s use of symbolism adds to the audience’s understanding of the play.
