Tunnel book

How can you create a tunnel book that depicts a painting from history?

Look at examples of tunnel books- the characteristics of a tunnel book, and some of the creative solutions to making them.

Tunnel book by Susan J. Bonthron, Otter Pond Bindery

tunnel book by Maria Pisano

Tunnel Map, Carol Barton, 1988

Harvest Moon, Roberta Lavadour 1998

Choose a painting that you would like to use as your source for your tunnel book structure. The painting that you choose needs to have a sense of multiple planes of space.

Review your selection with Ms. Lepine. Think about the different planes of space that you will create in your tunnel book.

First, create the background on one full sheet of heavy weight paper. See measurements on the board.

You will then create each of the other planes of space so that, when assembled, the tunnel book will appear as if one is viewing the painting dimensionally, seeing the foreground, middle and background space.

The parts are assembled onto the accordion folded strips, and glued into place in the proper plane of space. Use paper clips or masking tape to hold the pieces in place as you glue.

The front frame piece should be embellished to invite the viewer into the scene.

tunnel book by Maria Pisano

tunnel book by Julie Chen

The side pieces, both inside and out, should be painted/designed to embellish your painting.
