Electromagnetic Spectrum By: Danny Isaac

Gamma Rays Paul Villard discovered gamma radiation in 1900. He discovered it by studying a emitting piece of radium. Rutherford named Villard’s discovery of a new radiation gamma rays.

What is a gamma ray Radioactive materials (some natural and others made by man in things like nuclear power plants) can emit gamma-rays. Big particle accelerators that scientists use to help them understand what matter is made of can sometimes generate gamma-rays.

How are Gamma Rays used This property means that gamma radiation is often used to kill living organisms, in a process called irradiation. Applications of this include sterilizing medical equipment, removing decay-causing bacteria from many foods or preventing fruit and vegetables from sprouting to maintain freshness and flavor.

X rays German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen is usually credited as the discoverer of X-rays because he was the first to study them, though he is not the first to have observed their effects. He is also the one who gave them the name "X- rays", though many referred to these as "Röntgen rays“.

X ray uses It is used in medicine to identify disease to your internal organs. Like lung cancer. Also its used to see broken bone.

Ultraviolet The discovery of UV radiation was associated with the observation that silver salts darken when exposed to sunlight. In 1801 German physicist Johann Wilhelm Ritter made the hallmark observation that invisible rays just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum were effective at darkening silver chloride- soaked paper.

Ultraviolet uses It is used with sensitive documents like drivers licenses and passports. They are imprinted with watermarks that can only be seen by UV rays.

Visible rays Who ever discovered visible was the first person to open their eyes so no one knows who was the first.

Visible rays in everyday life Visible radiation is emitted by everything from fireflies to light bulbs to stars also by fast moving particles hitting other particles.

Infrared Infrared light was discovered in 1800 by Sir Frederick William Herschel. Herschel, born in Hanover, Germany, decided to investigate the temperature of each color of the spectrum produced when sunlight is passed through a prism

Infrared uses Infrared is used in night vision equipment when there isn’t much visible light to see.

Microwaves In 1888, Heinrich Hertz was the first to demonstrate the existence of electromagnetic waves by building an apparatus that produced and detected microwaves in the UHF region

Microwave uses Radar uses microwave radiation to detect the range, speed, and other characteristics of remote objects. Development of radar was accelerated during World War II due to its great military utility

Radio waves In 1887, Heinrich Hertz demonstrated the reality of electromagnetic waves by experimentally generating radio waves in his laboratory.

Radio wave uses The antennae on your television set receive the signal, in the form of electromagnetic waves, that is broadcasted from the television station. It is displayed on your television screen.
