4. SETTING: UNDERGROUND The setting of the book is underground were usually the lights are out and the people of ember are hopelessly trapped. But at the end of the book Lina,Doon, and Poppy are above ground.

5. THE MAIN CHARACTORS DOON LINA GRANDMA POPPY Doon: A teenage boy who is hopeless about finding a way out of ember and who gets very aggressive when he does not get the job that he wanted. Lina: A teenage girl who is determined to find a way out of ember. She gets in a lot of trouble Grandma: Linas grandma took care of Lina and poppy ever since their parents died, but now when Linas grandma becomes ill Lina has to take care of her Poppy: Poppy is Linas little sister. Lina has to take care of Poopy.

6. SUMMARY The story is mainly about a girl named Lina who is extremely determined to find a way out of the undergrounded city of ember. She was the new messenger in the city of ember. Once she found a wooden box with typed words she was willing to spend hours trying to put the ripped and chewed pieces together. Her friend Doon worked at the pipeworks, were they generate the unsuccessful power, and were all the rivers and rooms are. On Linas instructions she thinks it is a way to get out of ember, so she has Doon help her, they discover candles, matches, and boats (which they never knew of before). They get poppy and go off to the new world (above ground) after their bumpy ride in the boat through the dark pipeworks river.

7. SCENE 1 The first scene that I liked was when they got all of there jobs. In ember when you are 12 years old you get your job. The people of ember grab from a hat were there is different jobs. At first Lina got pipeworks, but then she switched with Doon and got the job that she wanted : messenger!! When they were in the room as Doon got messenger the mayor got mad at Doon because he was yelling. When Lina got pipeworks her heart sank. Linas best friend got the depot worker where she had to sit behind a desk and take orders for people who don’t go to the store. But, since a lot of the food in ember was rationed a lot of the time Linas best friend had to deny peoples order. pipeworks

8. SCENE 2 My second favorite scene was when Lina was taking a message to the mayor. She had sat down to wait for him to come to her. But it took a while and Lina was getting impatient. On the top of the building she was in was an open roof to the clock tower. She stood on top of it and did silly dances. The mayors guards went up and got Lina down. Later in the book she went on the tower again.

9. SCENE 3 My third favorite scene is when Doon and Lina were searching for the materials that were provided in the instruction that Lina had from the box that her Grandma was searching for. While they were looking they had to go to the pipeworks. There in a dark from they found candles, matches, and boats.

10. SCENE 4 My last favorite scene is when Doon, Lina, and Poppy find their way to the world above ground. The air smell great and so does the sound of the birds. But the rest I’ll leave for you to find out, I don’t want to spoil it for you.

11. MY OPINION I liked this book a lot. It had a lot of cliffhangers. It keeps you reading.
