What is inside a computer?

Basic parts A computer works much like the human body! For example…
Hard Drive Case/Chassis Processor NIC RAM Mother Board Operating System Video Card A computer works much like the human body! For example…

Hard Drive A Hard Drive stores or changes Data for long periods of Time. It is like long term memory, the things you never forget. Do you remember what you did about a year ago? If so, its like the computer asking the hard drive for data.

Processor A processor is much like a calculator and the brains of a computer. It computes numbers and tells the computer how to work with the help of the Operating System. We will talk about the OS in a minute.

RAM RAM stands for Random Access memory and is the short term memory of the computer. When data is no longer needed it dumps the data. Ram takes data from the hard drive and temporarily uses it. Have you ever talked with a friend and forgot what you talked about the next day? This is similar.

Video Card The video card is responsible for the pictures and video on the screen. The better the video card, the better the display. IF you play video games on your computer, you can thank your video card!

Operating System The Operating system tells the computer how to work and what to do with all the parts. An example of an OS is Microsoft XP, Vista or Windows. You could compare an Operating system to a conductor of an orchestra, or a coach of a basketball team. The players follow the instructions of what they are told to do.

NIC NIC, stands for network interface card and communicates with other computers or servers. This is how you connect to the internet. They send and reply instructions to each other. Imagine if your friend was coming over and you want them to bring a video game over. You would call them, give them instructions and they would reply. This is kind of how computers communicate. Except they talk in 1’s, and 0’s!

The Motherboard The mother board holds all the parts in place and help the processor tell the parts what to do. This is like the bones and nerves of the machine. Your bones hold your body in place, and your nervous system communicates with your brain to help your body move and function!

The PSU The power supply unit is what it sounds like, the “supplies the power” to the whole computer just like the lunch you eat will power your body to move, breath, and think. What would happen if the power supply stopped?

The Case The case holds the computer together much like your skin holds your body together and protects what is inside. The case also holds and protects the

What have you learned? Can anyone remember some of the part we just talked about and what they do?

Here they are again! During the slide show we talked about the… Hard Drive Case/Chassis\ Processor NIC RAM Mother Board Operating System Video Card

Summary So now we know the HDD keeps data for a long time, the processor is the brains, RAM is temporary, video cards make graphics, The OS tells the parts what to do, the motherboard holds everything while the case protects and holds all parts.

Questions Are there any questions?
