3 Group Work You will be competing in teams of 3 or 4 today for prizes. You will have several tasks to complete. 1) Consolidate knowledge on TWSAC: 10 questions 2) Just a minute 3) Group writing

4 1) 10 Questions As a group devise 10 questions to ask about TWSAC that you want to explore or to check something you are not sure about. Try to make them open and exploratory E.G:  Is there any progression in the poem? Is there a realisation or conclusion at the end?  What is the effect of the irregular rhythm? Ideas: How far does Yeats…. How is the theme of … What does the title mean? Why is the image of… Why use a rhyming couplet? 5 1) 10 Questions As a group, now categorise your questions Are they about: Language Author message/attitude Rhyme Rhythm Imagery Structure Form Thematic Context Now choose your most important 5 questions Swap with another group Try to answer their questions in as much detail as possible 15 points for the best answers 10 points for the best questions 5 points for 2nd best

7 Group Writing Together write a paragraph answering the question: Discuss the ways in which Yeats considers change in The Wild Swans at Coole Choose one area to focus on: -An image -A specific choice of language -A specific choice of structure

8 What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is a well explained sentence that presents your argument on a particular topic. Look at the 6 ideas about thesis statements. Rank them with most relevant at the top and least relevant at the bottom.

9 Thesis Statement In the first stanza, Yeats uses the words “autumn and “dry” and “still sky” to represent decay and to perhaps suggest an ageing body. He is using his environment to bring about thoughts of his ageing. The idea of nature inspiring contemplation is also found in The Cold Heaven where the “grey skies” bring about his thoughts.
