9. Thesis Statement In the first stanza, Yeats uses the words “autumn and “dry” and “still sky” to represent decay and to perhaps suggest an ageing body. He is using his environment to bring about thoughts of his ageing. The idea of nature inspiring contemplation is also found in The Cold Heaven where the “grey skies” bring about his thoughts.
