GETTING TO KNOW YOUR BOOK PORT DESKTOP (BPDT)

GENERAL BOOK PORT DESKTOP (BPDT) INFO. BPDT has two main functions:  Digital/Audio player  Digital recorder This module will focus on the BPDT as a digital audio player. Future modules will address obtaining digital/electronic books, using the BPDT as a digital recorder and other features available within this device.

GENERAL BPDT INFO It takes 4 hours to fully charge and it can be used while it is charging Once charged, it can last 8-10 hours No need to save your place in each document/file Enters “power-save” mode after:  15 minutes of inactivity  after the time set with the sleep timer control expires  when you press and hold the power key for 2 seconds

UNDERSTANDING ENHANCED NAVIGATION: Enhanced navigation means there are sections built into files (electronic/digital books) to make it easier to locate parts of the book or textbook These types of files are referred to as Digital Accessible Information System (DAISY) files Unit 3 will cover the specifics of using DAISY file navigation

TYPES OF FILES STORED ON BPDT Text -Electronic text, documents,.brf braille files, web pages—that do not provide enhanced navigation -DT provides the text navigation functions for these files Audio -Music, podcasts and recordings with no enhanced navigation -DT groups them into a single title and assigns Title Navigation Commands

TYPES OF FILES STORED ON BPDT CONTINUED Audio Books -Books from Audible.com provides the same navigation as audio files, and are grouped by title DAISY -Talking book format that Provides enhanced navigation -DT accepts two kinds: DAISY Text and DAISY audio

COMPARISON OF THE TYPES OF FILES TEXT Is read with synthesized (computer created) speech Words can be spelled Provides movement by character, word, line, sentence, paragraph, page, and percentage Move by character, word and line only when paused Move by sentence, paragraph and page any time DAISY text provides additional Heading Level navigation AUDIO Reads/Plays material as recorded (human voice) Provide movement by time or percentage Moves by 5 seconds, 30 seconds, or 10 min., Audio files are considered ‘Tracks’, and folders ‘Albums’ DAISY audio provides additional Heading Level navigation (minimal )

BPDT BASICS A “mask” is provided to conceal all but the keys for basic operation This layout is for students who may have cognitive or physical impairments that make it difficult to learn and interact with all the keys displayed at once. The first part of this unit assumes that the mask is installed on the BPDT. This is how your BPDT will look when you receive it.

ORIENTATION: Place the BPDT on a flat surface with the keys facing up. The device is slightly wedge-shaped with the front edge being slightly thinner than the rear edge. Orient the device so the thin side is closest to you and the thicker side is to the rear.

Rear Edge: Wired network jack AC (power) adapter Left Edge: No interfaces Front Edge: USB connector/National Library Service cartridge slot Right Edge: SD/SDHC memory card slot Earphone jack external microphone jack GENERAL LAYOUT: STARTING AT THE RIGHT, REAR CORNER AND MOVING CLOCKWISE AROUND THE VERTICAL EDGES OF THE DEVICE, THE FOLLOWING JACKS AND INTERFACES ARE ENCOUNTERED:

TOP SURFACE OF BPDT WITH MASK IN PLACE There are three distinct openings in the mask: the first one runs along the front edge of the player and extends part-way up the right side the second opening is in the upper right-hand corner the third opening is near the rear edge of the player slightly left of center The first and third openings reveal controls while the second (in the upper right-hand corner) reveals the speaker grill which can be easily tactually identified as a series of horizontal lines or bars.

CONTROLS IN THE FIRST OPENING IN THE MASK: Rewind Play / Stop Fast Forward Previous Title Next Title Record Power Sleep Timer

CONTROLS IN THE SECOND & THIRD OPENING IN THE MASK: Tone: up and down Volume: up and down Speaker

There are three distinct markings on the mask which help identify the locations of commonly used controls and interfaces: A dimple in the front edge of the mask = play/stop key (immediately above it) and the NLS cartridge slot (immediately below it). A notch in the left edge of the mask = the earphone jack (immediately below it on the left edge of the unit). A similar notch in the right edge of the mask = the power key (immediately to the left). TACTUAL MARKINGS ON THE MASK:

BASIC CONTROLS: POWER KEY Pressing and holding this key for approximately two seconds will turn the player on. The unit will announce the time followed, after a few seconds of busy tones, by the last title accessed. If the unit is on, pressing and holding the power button for approximately two seconds will put the unit in sleep mode with the announcement “power save mode.”

ACTIVITY ONE: TURNING ON THE BPDT 1. Locate the power key, which is the large, round button near the right edge of the unit. Press and hold it for about two seconds to turn on the player. It responds with a musical fanfare and a "Please Wait" message followed by a series of musical tones indicating that the unit is busy. 2. The first time you turn on the BPDT, it must boot up. This can take several seconds. When it finishes the boot process, it announces the first book in the Title list. 3. After this initial start-up, subsequent start-up times are much shorter and begin with the unit announcing the current time followed by the busy tones followed by an announcement of the last title accessed.

BASIC CONTROLS: PLAY/STOP Play/Stop: Press to start or stop audio or text playback. Press and hold to enter or exit “help mode” (provides access to the user’s guide). Also used to make a selection from a menu or list.

BASIC CONTROLS: REWIND Rewind: During audio playback, a single press moves backward five seconds. Press and hold to move back in increasingly larger increments of time. In text playback, a single press moves back by one sentence. Press and hold to move back in increments of five sentences. If playback is paused, a single press moves back by and announces a single character.

BASIC CONTROLS: FAST FORWARD Fast Forward: During audio playback, a single press moves forward five seconds. Press and hold to move forward in increasingly larger increments of time. In text playback, a single press moves forward by one sentence. Press and hold to move forward in increments of five sentences. If playback is paused, a single press moves forward by and announces a single character.

KEY LOCK: Press and hold Rewind and Fast- Forward simultaneously to turn on the key lock. This disables all controls to prevent accidental or unintended key presses. Press and hold Rewind and Fast- Forward again to turn off key lock mode. Note that key lock can be invoked during audio or text playback, but must be disabled before playback can be stopped or any other function can be used.

TITLE SELECT KEYS: Immediately to the right of the Play/Stop, Rewind and Fast- Forward Key cluster are two triangular or arrow-shaped buttons, one pointing to the left and one pointing to the right. These are used to move through the list of titles stored on the various types of media used with the BPDT. The left-pointing key moves backward and the right- pointing key moves forward through the list of titles on the selected media source.

USING TITLE SELECT KEYS TO CHANGE BETWEEN MEDIA SOURCES Pressing both title select keys simultaneously cycles through the various types of storage media used with the device. The list is as follows: Internal memory Voice memos SD card USB media

AVAILABLE MEDIA RESOURCES: The device is shipped with no SD card or USB media and there are no recorded voice memos. The internal memory, however, contains a sampling of audio and text titles as well as a number of web radio stations and podcast feeds. Note: Web radio and podcasts are beyond the scope of this unit and may be covered in a future module.

RECORD KEY FUNCTIONS AS FOLLOWS: Press and release to enter record pause (it is ready to record but it is paused). While in record pause mode, press and release to start recording. While recording, press and release to pause recording. Press and hold to record a voice memo. Release when finished. Note: Recording may be covered within a future module.

SLEEP TIMER KEY: This is used to set a timer which will stop playback and place the unit in power save mode after a set period of time. Repeatedly press the key until the desired amount of time is announced. The choices are: Fifteen minutes Thirty minutes Forty-five minutes One hour One hour, thirty minutes Two hours Sleep timer off

TONE CONTROL: To adjust the tone of both the built- in speaker as well as the earphones, press either the upper or lower half of the tone toggle once or repeatedly until the desired sound is achieved. Pressing the upper half of the control increases the treble response while reducing the bass response and pressing the lower half of the control increases bass and reduces treble. Pressing both halves of the control simultaneously returns the tone to the default setting.

VOLUME CONTROL: The volume control works similarly to the tone control. The upper half of the control increases the volume while the lower half decreases it. Pressing both halves simultaneously returns the volume to the default setting.
