WRITE BITES Early College Campus

Day 5: Review DEFINITION FOR VOICE VOICE shows the writer's personality. The writer should be writing from the heart. The language should bring the topic to life for the reader. PROVE your answer with a Quote. EXPLAIN and make connections to your answer. You ANSWER the Question.

My Name, " Esperanza says: "In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means too many letters. It means sadness, it means waiting.... It is the Mexican records my father plays on Sunday mornings when he is shaving, songs like sobbing.“ In this lyrical sketch, Esperanza traces the reason for the discomfiture with her name to cultural hegemony, the Mexican males' suppression of their women. REFLECT!... THINK!... Share!... (Teacher/Student discussion) (3 minutes)

My Name, “ Esperanza was named after her Mexican great-grandmother who was wild but tamed by her husband: "She looked out the window all her life, the way so many women sit their sadness on an elbow.... Esperanza, I have inherited her name, but I don't want to inherit her place by the window.“ A woman's place is one of domestic confinement, not one of liberation and choice. REFLECT!... THINK!... Share!... (Teacher/Student discussion) (3 minutes)

My Name, " Esperanza says: “I would like to baptize myself under a new name, a name more like the real me, the one nobody sees. Esperanza as Lisandra or Maritza or Zeze the X. Yes. Something like Zeze the X will do" She prefers a name not culturally embedded in a male-centered ideology. In the meantime she feels herself to be like an X, an indeterminate personality in search of an identity. REFLECT!... THINK!... Share!... (Teacher/Student discussion) (3 minutes)

Include a few sentences with a direct quote that shows Prove. Your TURN!- 5 minutes Personal Response- (3-5 lines) What images from the poem linger in your mind?
