Decimal Uses By Caroline and Raj :-D

Dewey decimal System T he dewey decimal system is mainly used in the library. People use this system to arrange books so people can reach and find it easier. For example, if you were trying to find a book about sharks, you would go to 597.3. If you were trying to find something on italian recipes, then you would go to the decimal 641.8. One more example would be if you want to get stuff on titanic history, you would search 910. A long time ago, when the libraries had first come, no one could find the book they were looking for with ease. Now, the Dewey Decimal System organizes the books well.

GPS Now we’re going to talk about how you use decimals in GPS. You usually see decimals in the GPS when it calculates how many miles until your destination. When the GPS first came out, people were happy because they could now see where they were going and how many miles it was away. Where as the paper map couldn’t tell you the distance until your destination. Charlie wanted to go to the Science Exhibit at VMFA, he wanted to calculate how long it would take to get there, so he used his gps to find out. The GPS can be basically anywhere in any size. For example GPS watches are used to track how many miles you’ve been running/walking. Bob had a portable GPS, but he didn’t know if it would work on his new motorcycle. Amazingly, he discovered that as long as he has satellite signals, the GPS would work on any vehicle including his new motorcycle to calculates the miles.

Money Decimals can be used in many different ways including money. They are usually separated in dollars and cents. You usually see decimals in money when you see a price tag on items that you want to buy. Here’s an example. Quinn wanted to find out how much money a doll would cost, so she went to the toy department and looked at the price on her favorite doll. It said that it was $14.99. Her mother said that she could only spend $15.00. So, she looked at the amount on the doll and saw $14.00 and 99 cents. She then realized that she had enough money. Carolyn was walking on the sidewalk when she saw a cool lemonade stand. She went and asked how much money the lemonade cost. The lemonade was $4.00. Carolyn looked in her purse and saw $5.00 to spend. She spent all her money and received $1.00 in return. Another example is, Zach went to the state fair on Friday and went on a rollercoaster. After that, he was super hungry so he got a corndog. At the end of the day, he got a bill that said he had to pay $19.99. He spent $20.00 in total and got 1 penny back.

Grades Decimals are also seen almost every time you go to school! Teachers use decimals when they’re grading papers. For example, Kesha got a 99.5 on her math test, so she got an A. Mark got a 89.0 on his science project, so thats a B. One last example is Ellie got a 83.5 on her social studies brochure, so she got a C. Grades allow us to see how many questions we missed and how many we got right. If teachers didn’t grade papers, we wouldn’t know in what question we need more practice in. When the teacher rounds your grades at the end of the year, she has to find the average.
