2 What you need: Notebook (pgs. 22-23) Pencil or pen
Colored, pencils or markers

3 Conflict Turn in your notebook to page 22. Label each triangle section as shown to the right: Man vs. Man (external) Man vs. Nature (external) Man vs. Society (External) Man vs. Self (Internal)

4 Let’s start by reviewing…
Conflict: A struggle between opposing forces Characters in conflict form the basis for novels, short stories, and plays. Two kinds of conflict: external internal

5 Your task… Copy the definition of each type of conflict under each triangular flap. The definition should be written on the notebook paper. Put examples on the inside , on the back of the actual flap. Examples are usually going to be movie and/or book titles

6 Let’s start with external…

7 Man vs. Man Definition: an external struggle, mental or physical, between 2 characters. The struggle is usually between the protagonist and antagonist.

8 Man vs. Man Dodge Ball: In this film, Peter Le Flure owns a gym, and his arch enemy, White Goodman, threatens to take over Peter’s failing business. The entire plot is centered around the Peter vs. White conflict.

9 Man vs. Man Other popular examples include:
Wyle Coyote vs. Road Runner Monk vs. priscilla Batman vs. Joker Austin Powers vs. Dr. Evil

10 Man vs. Nature Definition:
an external struggle between a character and Mother Nature Mother Nature includes weather, animals, insects, sickness and epidemics

11 Man vs. Nature Survivor On this popular television show, individuals are forced to survive in the wilderness. Contestants are given the bare essentials for survival, and they must survive the weather, harsh conditions, and occasionally animals.

12 Man vs. Nature Other popular examples include: Bruce Almighty
Monk vs. the blizzard Hatchet Lost

13 Man vs. Society Definition:
An external struggle between a character and the laws of beliefs of a group Society could involve poverty, politics, social norms, expectations or values

14 Man vs. Society Shrek: In this film the protagonist, a very sweet but physically unattractive ogre, fights to change the kingdom’s mind about ogres…he wants humans to see that ogres aren’t all bad!

15 Man vs. Society Other examples include: The Wave Borat
Schindler’s List

16 Now let’s do internal…

17 Man vs. self Definition:
The struggle of a character within his/herself These struggles include feelings, conscience or fear

18 Man vs. Self The Water Boy:
Bobby Bouche, a sheltered “mama’s boy”, battles with himself over whether to disobey his mother and play football or obey his mother and remain the water boy for the team.

19 Man vs. Self Other Examples: Tommy Boy
Priscilla battling to decide if she should stay quiet or help melvin Rocky in Rocky Balboa (all six movies center around Rocky’s internal struggle)

20 What’s next? Now turn to page 23 in your notebook.
Label each square like the example in the picture. Now, make sure you’ve cut out all 12 scenarios. Read each scenario and decide what type of conflict is represented. ***Use page 22 to help you!! Glue each scenario under the correct heading!!

21 All done? You can now color the pages related to conflict!!
