 Hydraulic Log Splitter ET 493- Senior Design One Jordan Millet Ridge Bourgeois Marcus Millet Advisor: Dr. Junkun Ma Teacher: Dr. Cris Koutsourgeras

Introduction  For our project, we have chosen to design a hydraulic log splitter that is capable of being towed by a vehicle using engineering methods that we have obtained throughout the years.

What we are trying to accomplish

Overview of Project  The Project is divided into three main parts:  The Trailer Design  The Hydraulics and Pump Design  The Control System

Trailer Design  Jordan Millet  Goal: To design a trailer that will be able to support a certain amount of weight and capable of traveling at a maximum speed of 75 miles per hour.

Trailer Design -Objective: To design the trailer in a way that you flip the trailer the horizontal position that you tow the machine in, to a vertical position that is needed for use.

Trailer Design  Trailer will be made with W-beam (w150-22)  HSS (High Speed Steel) for the tongue of the trailer.  Estimated Weight: 400 pounds

Hydraulic System  Ridge Bourgeois  We will design a hydraulic system that is able to support a design force.  This force is the force needed to split a log with maximum of two foot in length.

Hydraulic System  We will have to find suitable valve systems for the hydraulics and select the capacity of the hydraulic pump.

Hydraulic System  Other things that we will have to take into account:  Types of lubricants to use  What size of cylinders for the hydraulics?  What size motor needed for the hydraulics?  What size of reservoir to store hydraulic oil?

Hydraulic Design  Engineering designs and practices that were used such as mechanical design, and fluid mechanics.

Control System  The control system is the main part to make the wedge go up and down in order to split logs.  The control system determines the amount of hydraulic pressure that will be exerted to the cylinder.

Control System  Detent Control System is the type of Control system that we have decided to use.  Two-Way control system.  Auto-Return  Safety!!!

Parts needed for Log Splitter  2-inch Ball Coupler  Hydraulic Cylinder  Mounting Plates  Wedge  Splitting Beam  Engine (Donated)  2 16 inch Tires  Hydraulic Fluid Filter  Hydraulic Pump

Parts for Log Splitter  Beam Bracket  Support Leg  1 ¼” Safety Chain around 12 inches long  Tongue made of HSS 3/16 x 2 x 2  1 axle  2 spindles and 2 hub caps  One W beam ¼ x 6 x 6 (W 150-22) 60”  Hydraulic Hose

Potential Challenges  There will be some challenges associated with the project.  Cost of parts  Another challenge will be to find people who may be willing to donate some parts to us.  Time Management

Moving Forward:  Begin construction of the log splitter starting with the frame.  Have a fully functional hydraulic log splitter by the end of next semester.  Make modifications as needed

Timeline for Spring Semester  February-March: Continue to get parts in and once in begin construction of trailer.  March-April: Finish trailer frame and install hydraulics and control systems.  April-End of April: Make modifications as needed and begin final presentation work.
