Now, what movie does this summary describe? This feel-good comedy showcases the trials and triumphs of a passionate, poor musician who inspires young students to develop a love for music. Dewey Finn is about to get kicked out by his roommate because he can’t pay his rent when he accepts a long- term substitute job as a fourth grade teacher under his friend’s name, Ted Schneebly. At first, “Mr. Schneebly” (Dewey) just wants to count down the minutes until school’s out. However, he soon realizes that if he can make his students into a talented rock band, they could possibly win him money at an upcoming competition. (continued…)

Dewey gets all of the students actively involved; each kid contributes to their band. Soon, the class is enthusiastically preparing to perform at the competition. While the band continues to improve, Dewey has difficulty keeping up the lie that he’s “Mr. Schneebly.” In addition, the administration and the parents don’t have a clue what’s really going on. Both lies end up being discovered and it seems that nothing will work out; however, fortunately, this “rocking” class prevails. In the end, Dewey learns to put others before himself, and the students get to keep learning from him during private lessons after school.

Which movie summaries were better? Why?

The better summaries… -identified the main idea -gave details about important events in the beginning, middle, and end -concluded with a summarizing statement

Besides telling someone about a movie, what other real-life situations might require you to summarize information?

During a Doctor’s Office Visit--tell your doctor about your symptoms After a Car Accident--tell a police officer what happened At Home--tell your parents about your day at school With Friends--tell them about your sporting event At School--summarize information for assignments and tests

4-Step Summary: Step #1: Create a topic sentence. (I+V+F) Introduce (What are you summarizing?) Verb (Examples: describes, explains, tells, convinces, shows) Finish the Thought (the main idea of what you’re summarizing) Beauty and the Beast, a Disney movie based on a classic fairytale by Madame Gabrielle- Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, showsthe importance of not judging others before you get to know them.

Step #2: Create a fact outline. List the most important information from the beginning, middle, and end. * Belle, beautiful and kind, lives with her father. * turns down a marriage proposal from Gaston. * gets held hostage in a magical castle with a beast * the beast is really a prince who had a spell cast on him * She begins to care about the beast * Gaston gets jealous and leads a mob to kill the beast * Belle, the beast, and the servants fight the mob and prevail. * Belle falls in love with the beast and he falls in love with Belle. * spell is broken, and everyone lives happily ever after

Step #3: Write a conclusion sentence. Write a conclusion sentence that wraps up the information you summarized. In the end, because Belle didn’t judge the beast, she falls in love with him based on who he is as a person.

Step #4: Put Steps #1, #2, and #3 together into one paragraph. Use complete sentences. Use transition words. Check your conventions. (continued…)

Beauty and the Beast, a Disney movie based on a classic fairytale by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, shows the importance of not judging others before you get to know them. Belle, a beautiful and kind young lady, lives with her father. She turns down a marriage proposal from Gaston, a conceited, narrow-minded man in town. When going on a trip for her father, Belle ends up getting held hostage in a magical castle with a beast. However, the beast is really a prince who had a spell cast on him. While at the castle, Belle begins to care about the beast. Gaston gets jealous and leads a mob to kill the beast as an act of revenge. Thankfully, Belle, the beast, and the servants fight the mob and prevail. Belle falls in love with the beast and he falls in love with Belle. This love breaks the spell, and everyone lives happily ever after. In the end, because Belle didn’t judge the beast, she falls in love with him based on who he is as a person.

Now you get to practice creating a 4-Step Summary! Your task: In your assigned group, read Moira’s Birthday by Robert Munsch and Michael Martchenko. Working together, create a 4-Step Summary of the story. Before you begin, you must assign roles within your group. *Note: We will begin this task today and finish it tomorrow.

Leader: Make sure all group members are staying on- task and participating equally. Scribe: Write down the ideas your group comes up with. Write down the role assignments in the heading section of your group’s paper. Reader: Read the story to your group. Use an appropriate volume so that you can be heard by your group but not disturb other groups. Resource Guide: If you have four people in your group, assign one person for this role. Check your resource (your 4-Step Summary notes) as you go to make sure your group is correctly following all steps. ALL MEMBERS SHOULD CONTRIBUTE EQUALLY TO THE SUMMARY! RAISE YOUR HAND IF YOU NEED HELP! :)
