3 What will you be doing… We will be reading five of Dr. Seuss’ books in class. However, feel free to read as many as you would like in your spare time. The five we are going to be focusing on are: 1) Green Eggs and Ham 2) The Cat in the Hat 3) The Lorax 4) Oh the Places You’ll Go 5) How the Grinch Stole Christmas. At the end we will be creating the next Dr. Seuss book!

4 Students you will research these questions… 1. What is your favorite Dr. Seuss book and why? 2. What is your least favorite Dr. Seuss book and why? 3. Who is your favorite character in one of Dr. Seuss’ books and why? 4. Who is your least favorite character in one of Dr. Seuss’ books and why? 5. What is Dr. Seuss’ real name? 6. What was the first book that got published that Dr. Seuss wrote? You will research and answer these questions with http://www.seussville.com/

5 Creating the next Dr. Seuss Book… You will get into groups of three. You will all help with each aspect of the book, however one person will be the author, one person will be the illustrator, and the other person will be the editor. Author- Writes the book Illustrator- Creates pictures for the book Editor- Checks for spelling and grammatical errors. *****EVERYONE WORKS TOGETHER AND HELPS WITH ALL ASPECTS OF THE BOOK!!!

6 Creating the next Dr. Seuss Book… The books need to be five pages with five illustrations. If creativity and time allow you may do more! The book needs a beginning, middle, and an ending. The book needs to have setting, plot, characters, conflict, and resolution.

7 Standards… W.2.1- Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply reasons that support the opinion, use linking words to connect opinions and reasons, and provide a concluding statement or section. RF. 2.3- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RF.2.4- Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. W.2.5- With guidance and support from adults and peers, focus on a topic and strengthen writing as needed by revising and editing.

8 Conclusion… Congratulations you have written the next Dr. Seuss book awarded with a Caldecott Award! Fabulous job!

9 Extensions… 1.Make your own who! 2. Extend your favorite Dr. Seuss story 3.Create a skit for your Dr. Seuss story 4.Write a biographical report on Dr. Seuss 5.We will have a field trip to Seuss Landing in Universal Studios in Florida.

10 How will I be graded?... Each section will receive a 1-10. 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. Introduction Conflict Resolution Punctuation Grammar Illustrations Plot Characters Setting Participation

11 Further Study… Once again feel free to read as many Dr. Seuss books as you would like! Several of the books have also been made into movies as well! “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” –Dr. Seuss
