2 S TATISTICS Northlake, IL has a population of 12,323 people 7.4% of that population consists of people ages 10-14 and 7.9% ages 15-19 Northlake is a middle-class community As of 2013, 78% of all teens in the United States own cell phones 37% of those phones are smartphones 58% of teens in possession of these devices have also downloaded at least one app to their phone or tablet

3 QR C ODE Stands for “Quick Response” 2D barcode with a machine-readable optical label that contains information about the item to which it is attached.

4 W HY D OES IT M ATTER ? We live in a digital age dominated by software that shows no signs of slowing down and will only continue growing. Many companies and schools are using QR Codes, so it’s important to know what they are. Helps expose teens to different technologies and get them excited about the library Various free QR Code apps (QRReader, i-nigma, Quick Scan) for teens to download are available

13 T EENS AND T ECHNOLOGY By creating programs that appeal to their growing interests, the library will be able to draw more teen patrons in and keep them coming back! Teaching teens the basics of QR Codes and how they work will get them to use their phones and tablets for educational purposes. We want them to feel empowered and that the library taught them something.
