1 WARM UP: Tuesday, Sept 17 Reminder: write the warm up in your 3 brad folder List 3 similarities between prokaryotic & eukaryotic cells

2 Cells: Organelles Day #1

3 Objectives Define the term organelle.
List organelles found in living cells Identify the important roles organelles play within a cell. Label organelles in plant and animal cells.

4 Organelles = organized or specialized structures within a living cell
= differentiated structure within a cell = parts of the cell that act like specialized “organs”

5 1.Cytoplasm Description: fluid like substance that fills the area of the cell outside the nucleus Function: site of many cellular activities; surrounds organelles

6 2.Nucleus Description: large organelle near the center of the cell, composed on DNA & proteins

7 2.Nucleus Function: control center of the cell (acts like a brain)
Chromatin = coiled up DNA in nucleus Nuclear Envelope = surrounds nucleus Nucleolus = makes ribosomes

8 nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus

9 3.Ribosomes Description: Small particles composed of RNA & proteins. Found either: Free in the cytoplasm Attached to other organelles Function: make proteins

10 ribosomes nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus

11 4.Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Description: network of membranes within the cytoplasm 2 Types: Smooth ER Rough ER

12 4.Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Function: Smooth ER = makes lipids & detoxifies Rough ER = sorts proteins & makes them into more complex structures

13 ribosomes Smooth ER Rough ER cytoplasm nucleolus nucleus

14 5.Golgi Apparatus Description: layers of membranes
Function: packaging area of the cell Sorts & prepares protein compounds Ships proteins where needed Storage within cell Out of cell

15 ribosomes Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus Golgi apparatus

16 6.Lysosomes Description: small sacs of digestive enzymes
Function: breakdown macromolecules & digest old organelles (“clean up crew”)

17 lysosome ribosomes Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus Golgi apparatus

18 Don’t Forget: Summary Add a horizontal line to the bottom of you cornell notes Tonight: write a 3-5 complete sentence summary of our lecture today

19 AVID Thinking Strategy: Tattoo or Body Art
You are in charge of developing a tattoo to allow the world to know about one of the discussed organelles. 1. The centerpiece of the tattoo must be a slogan representing the organelle. 2. The surrounding artwork (minimum of 3 colors) must represent the organelle’s function 3. The artwork must be suitable for all ages and appropriate for viewing in all social situations. complete sentence explanation of how the artwork represents the organelle AND the best location for the tattoo on the body

20 Warm Up: Wednesday, Sept 18
Reminder: write in your 3 brad folder List 2 organelles we discussed in class yesterday and give their function.

21 Cells: Organelles Day #2

22 Objectives List organelles found in living cells
Identify the important roles organelles play within a cell.

23 7.Vacuoles Description: single membrane fluid filled space within cell
Very large in plant cells Small in animal cells Function: maintains fluid, removes waste (storage unit of cell)

24 lysosome ribosomes Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus vacuole Golgi apparatus

25 8.Mitochondria Description: large organelle with folded internal membranes Has 2 membranes Contains own DNA Function: makes energy for the cell

26 lysosome ribosomes Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus vacuole Golgi apparatus mitochondria

27 9.Chloroplast Description: organelle contained by 2 membranes occurring in a variety of shapes & sizes Only occur in plant cells Contains own DNA

28 9.Chloroplast Function: site of photosynthesis
Traps energy from the sun Converts energy to chemical energy

29 lysosome ribosomes chloroplast Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus vacuole Golgi apparatus mitochondria

30 10.Cytoskeleton Description: jelly like rectangle that contains thread-like microtubles Function: support structure & transportation system of cell Latin root: Cyto= cell

31 lysosome ribosomes chloroplast Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus cytoskeleton vacuole Golgi apparatus mitochondria

32 11.Centrioles Description: rod shaped bodies near the nucleus
Function: help separate chromosomes during cell division (mitosis)

33 lysosome ribosomes chloroplast Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus centrioles cytoskeleton vacuole Golgi apparatus mitochondria

34 12.Cell Membrane Description: outer layer of the cell
Mainly composed of lipids & proteins Lipid bi-layer & embedded proteins Function: regulates what enters & leaves the cell Latin Root: Bi = 2

35 lysosome ribosomes chloroplast Smooth ER Rough ER nucleus cytoplasm nucleolus Cell membrane cytoskeleton vacuole Golgi apparatus mitochondria

36 13.Cell Wall Description: fairly rigid layer that surrounds the outside of the cell membrane Found only around plant cells Give plant cells square shape Function: provides structure, support & protect for cell

37 Don’t Forget: Summary Add a horizontal line to the bottom of you cornell notes Tonight: write a 3-5 complete sentence summary of our lecture today

38 AVId Thinking Strategy: Toy Design (#14 page 8)
Apply your knowledge of organelles to design the best selling toy of the season. It must be able to fit into a standard backpack & not cause serious bodily injury as part of normal use. What is the name of the toy? 2 Fun Features of Toy What age group is the toy designed to reach? Use 4-5 complete sentences to describe how the toy employs on of the organelle’s functions. Make an illustration of the toy (minimum of 3 colors).

39 Warm Up: Thursday, Sept 19 Reminder: write in your 3 brad folder
What macromolecules make up the cell membrane? What is the function of the cytoskeleton?

40 Animal vs. Plant Cell

41 Objectives Compare and contrast animal and plant cells.
Label organelles in plant and animal cells.

42 What is the difference? Plant vs Animal cells
Plant Cells Animal Cells Square shaped Round shaped Contain large vacuoles Contain small vacuoles Surrounded by cell wall No cell wall Contain chloroplasts No chloroplasts

43

44 Quiz Tomorrow In Class Today: Tonight:
Complete animal & plant cell handouts Color in and label organelles on cell drawings Tonight: Review labeled handouts for plant and animal cells Review functions of organelles

45 List 3 differences between plants and animal cells.
Warm Up: Friday, Sept 20 Reminder: write in your 3 brad folder List 3 differences between plants and animal cells.

46 Friday, Sept 20 Cell Quiz
