IDEAS Who am I? What business am I in? What field or industry am I in? What do I study? What group of people do I serve? (be specific) What position am I in? How do I serve? What is my USP (Unique Selling Proposition)? What makes me different? What benefits do I give my customers or employer? Others? Be creative! 5 Brainstorm what YOU want to say to accomplish your GOAL. 30 Second “Elevator Pitch”

Eliminate industry jargon. 6. Read your pitch out loud. 7. Practice, practice, practice. Pitch it to your friends and colleagues. 8. Prepare a few variations for different situations. 6 The perfect elevator pitch requires preparation. 30 Second “Elevator Pitch”

Here’s an example of how to begin a pitch that includes the essentials: “Hi. I am Jessica Hill. I am an accountant with 10 years experience in the insurance industry and I’m looking for opportunities in the Dallas area with both insurance and finance companies.” That speech would take about 15 seconds. Jessica would then want to use her next 15 seconds to add details about: Her unique selling proposition Special skills Specific ways she could help a potential employer 7 A good pitch should answer three questions: Who are you? What do you do? What are you looking for? 30 Second “Elevator Pitch”

EXAMPLE It’s important to remember that the people will focus on WIFM (What’s in It for Me?) For example, this introduction: “I am a human resources professional with 10 years experience working for consumer products companies.” The pitch would be more powerful if you said: “I am a human resources professional with a strong track record in helping to identify and recruit top-level talent into management.” Focusing on benefits will help convince an interviewer that you have the experience and skills to get the job done. 8 How would you present yourself to a potential client? 30 Second “Elevator Pitch”

EXAMPLE “Hi, my name is Samantha, and I am a senior Environmental Sciences major. I’m looking for a position that will allow me to use my research and analysis skills. Over the past few years, I’ve been strengthening these skills through my work with a local watershed council on conservation strategies to support water quality and habitats. Eventually, I’d like develop education programs on water conservation awareness. I read that your organization is involved in water quality projects. Can you tell me how someone with my experience may fit into your organization?” 9 How would you present yourself to a potential employer? 30 Second “Elevator Pitch”
