 Learning Goal: I am able to describe the common issues that currently exist with Canada’s forestry industry.

 Canada has the 3 rd largest forested area in the world (Russia #1, Brazil #2)  Our forests cover almost half of Canada which is equal to the area of 15 western European countries combined

 What is the Boreal Forest? What is the Boreal Forest?

 Commercial forests: can be logged for profit because the trees grow fast and the forests are near roads, railways and waterways  Non-commercial forests: trees are not cut down because they are too far from transportation networks. It is also too cold for these trees to grow quickly

 In the past all furniture was made of solid wood (Oak or Cherry). It was expensive but would last a lifetime!! Today lots of furniture is not made from a solid piece of wood

HEMNES Desk with add-on unit, white stain $425.00

Solid wood desk Classical desk Price:US $2,800.00 / piece

Clear Cutting  Is the fastest and cheapest method of logging  Loggers remove every tree  When loggers replant trees, the forest grows uniformly  Sometimes loggers do not replant trees or the trees do not grow successfully

 Clear cut the old growth areas of the forest  Seed bearing trees are left to re-grow the trees

 Cut down only the old trees of a specific size, type and/or quality  Is the least damaging to the forest  Is the most expensive method of forestry  Rick Mercer and Selective Cutting Rick Mercer and Selective Cutting

 What if we don't replant the trees? What will happen to the forests or the pollution levels?  What about forest fires? Do they have any positive impact on the environment?

 Chapter 25 (Page 309) 1. Define all key terms from page 309 into your notes 2. Summarize and draw a diagram in your notes for clear cutting, shelter wood cutting, and selective cutting 3. On page 317 answer # 1, 3, 5 4. Briefly explain the current environmental threats to Canada’s forests 5. How are fires a positive and negative function for Canada’s forests? 6. Using your completed note from the past 2 periods, write at least 3 possible test questions. They could be in the form of multiple choice or questions or they could be long answer questions. Be sure to construct an answer sheet too. Hand this in to Mr. Meyer by the end of the period!!!!!
