2 HOMES Variety of homes found in the BNA The wealthy in towns had large, elegant homes. Farmers in rural areas might have had only one room in their house to start. Aboriginal peoples still built traditional homes.

4 TRANSPORTATION Huge Challenge Some rough roads but most travelled by water Most communities were along waterways. On land travel was done by foot, horse or oxen. Winter made for easier travel First public railway was in Canada East in 1836—not incredibly useful for many years.

6 HEALTH CARE Common: measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough. Also common: death from those diseases. Cities: Epidemics are common. Why? Rural: Not as much. Why? Most people received traditional healthcare at home from family members using information from aboriginal peoples. What would they have used?

7 HEALTHCARE Rural residents were not likely to ever see a doctor. Urban residents may but the treatment was very simple. No antibiotics, no aspirin or Tylenol for pain. What does that mean?

8 EDUCATION Education was not seen as important. Learning a trade or working the farm was seen as important. Reading and books did have an importance. Reading aloud was a family pastime. Early Schools: run by churches The wealthy had private tutors Publicly funded schools came later. Were primarily for white children. Minority groups set up their own schools. Aboriginals were often taught by religious groups.

10 PASTIMES Similar in rural and urban. Include: outdoor sports, crafts such as needlework or carving, making music, story telling, reading and playing games.
