Mikko Rekola Joel Huttunen The Nordic Independent Living Challenge Emergency system for assisted independent living 4.2.2015

Motivation 3.2.2015 Mikko Rekola, Joel Huttunen 2/11 ●Elderly people represent 25% of the entire Nordic adult population ●The number will increase every year ●40% in 2030

Motivation 3.2.2015 Mikko Rekola, Joel Huttunen 2/11 ●The Nordic Independent Living Challenge ●Goal is to make people able to live independently in their own home ●Problem we want to solve: elderly people often forget to drink enough on hot days ●It is estimated that in 2003 more than 10 000 elderly people died in France because of the heat wave ●Our goal: easy to apply solution ●Our goal: getting notification of too low water usage before things get out of hands

Idea 3.2.2015 Mikko Rekola, Joel Huttunen 2/11 ●System that informs someone that the elderly person has not used enough water ●A device that is attached directly to the water pipes ●The data is sent via wifi to server ●The data might be sent to a mobile phone of caretaker or shown on a computer screen ●By comparing the water usage between different days, we can deduce if something is amiss ○Not using any water in 8 hours on a hot day → might have already passed out

Use cases 3.2.2015 Mikko Rekola, Joel Huttunen 2/11 ●Home caregiver suspects that the elderly person does not drink enough ○Can install a simple device on pipes to see how much water is used ○If the worry proves justifiable, a more permanent solution can be applied ●Can follow how often the elderly person goes to toilet ●The elderly person is worried and wants to follow how much water is used

Solution ●We attempt to detect if water is flowing in pipes by listening the waterflow with a microphone ●The pitch and amplitude of the water can be used to approximate the water temperature ●At first we attempt to make a simple application that detects how long the water is flowing

Solution Arduino powered prototype control system: -Enables easy access via wifi -Low power consumption -Easy to modify -Small size Server: -Django powered solution

Competition Schedule

Our Schedule Target to create working prototype before intermediate reports ( 11.3.2015) The prototype includes: -Basic server side solution -Simple view -Working hardware After prototype we will enhance our solution by optimizing the power consumption and improving the operator view.

Workload We estimate that this project’s payload is about 100 hours per person, so about 3-4 credits. 1)Order necessary hardware 2)Find out what kind of data the microphone produces and what kind of processing it needs 3)Create a server that can use the data meaningfully
