9 Timing Matters ▪Apply in first or second year of grad school for major fellowships ▪Note deadlines and allow six to twelve months for national fellowships! Make a schedule, backing up from the submission date ▪Most major deadlines occur in fall. Use summer and class projects to develop ideas and hone essays ▪Learn to write daily ▪Give referees plenty of time, and provide polite reminders as the deadline approaches

10 Make Connections ▪Expand your circle: Faculty Staff Graduate Students Postdocs Peers Scientists Visiting Speakers ▪Cultivate four to five solid recommenders who can write positively and authoritatively about you ▪Develop contacts and affiliations at other institutions, research sites, national laboratories ▪Attend conferences, participate in travel opportunities, internships, workshops, service and outreach projects
