U SING A NNUALS AND P ERENNIALS IN THE L ANDSCAPE Ms. Gripshover Landscaping Unit 9

O UR O BJECTIVES Identify the difference between an annual and a perennial. Explain how to use annuals and perennials in the landscape. Describe how to design a flower garden.

V OCABULARY S CAVENGER H UNT Annual Biennial Border Garden Bulbs Deadhead Herbaceous Island bed Mulch Perennial

W HAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ANNUAL AND A PERENNIAL ? Flowers add visual interest as well as fragrance Flowers can be divided into 3 categories: Annual- completes life cycle in one growing season Ex: marigolds, petunias, impatiens, and geraniums Perennial- lives year after year, soft green tissue makes them herbaceous (unlike woody tissue on trees and shrubs) Ex: peony, roses, delphinium, hosta, daylily Biennial- lives for two years Grows foliage in first year blooms in second year

A S PECIAL K IND OF P ERENNIAL Bulb- flowering plants that have underground storage structure that allows plant to overwinter and flower the following year Ex: tulips and daffodils

T HE D IFFERENCE I N A N UT S HELL Live for one growing season Bloom the entire season Die with the coming of frost Must prepare the soil bed well Live year after year Bloom for about a two week span Can overwinter by underground storage structure ANNUALSPERENNIALS

H OW ARE ANNUALS AND PERENNIALS USED IN THE LANDSCAPE ? Annuals bring continuous color throughout the season Good for window boxes/ containers Attract butterflies Cut flowers for indoor use Perennials have many of the same uses as annuals Blooming seasons are much shorter therefore you must pay attention to that when planning a garden Use a variety of plants that bloom at different times

T AKING C ARE OF A NNUALS & P ERENNIALS Proper location is a necessity Specific environmental conditions needed Two critical factors: Sunlight Moisture *** Use a reference book when planning gardens to make sure these plants will work with the location Garden will need to be mulched, weeded, and watered Mulch- a material that is placed around plants to maintain moisture and keep soil temperature even, also used for the beauty Deadheaded- removing flowers that are dying Finally, perennials will need to be divided every 3-5 yrs.

H OW DO YOU DESIGN A FLOWER GARDEN ? 1 st design garden on paper Allows the correct types and number of plants to be purchased Once planted, no need to move them 2 nd - decide purpose of garden and location 3 rd - evaluate environment around garden and select proper plants Pay close attention to blooming times, environmental requirements, etc.

2 T YPES OF G ARDENS Border garden is used along a fence or a wall in the yard Usually viewed from one side only Tall plants in back, short in front Stagger heights to keep from having a “stair step” view from the side Island bed is placed in the center of a yard Tall plants in the center, shorter on the edges
