FACTS Known for its production of minerals, coffee, tropical fruit, sugar cane, beans, corn and bananas, as well as for its growing textiles industry, which serves the international market. Located at Central America. Bordered to the west: Guatemala; southwest: El Salvador; southeast: Nicaragua; south: Pacific Ocean; north: Caribbean Sea. Area of about 112,492 km².

FACTS Population of more than 8 millions people. Multiethnic, 4 major ethnic families: majority white or mestizos, indigenous peoples (Lenca, Miskito, Tolupanes, Chortis, Pech, Tawahkas), Garifuna and Creole English speakers. Rugged territory, with rows of high mountains, high plateaus, deep valleys with extensive and fertile plains crossed by rivers (99.8% land, 0.2% water).
