1 9 th Grade CBA Classroom Based Assessment Humans and the Environment

2 What is a CBA? Classroom Based Assessment for Social Studies Required by the state for all 9 th graders The topic is assigned by the state You will have time to work on it in class this week and next week It will include research and a presentation of that research to the class This will be a TEST grade which will appear on the 4 th Quarter Due Date: Monday, April 23 rd !

3 Topic - Environment You will choose a topic from a list. No one may choose the same topic as anyone else. You will EITHER propose a solution to a current environmental issue OR analyze an historical situation in the environment and propose an alternative that would have improved the outcome. Essential Questions: How have the peoples of Asia, the Pacific, or Latin America addressed issues involving resource distribution and sustainability? How have human conflicts contributed to environmental issues? How do humans adapt, modify, and utilize the environment? What are the costs and benefits?

4 Research You will conduct research. You are required to have at least 4 VALID sources on a TYPED Works Cited Page to be turned in the day of your presentation. You will need to complete a Note-Taking Guide for each source. You will also fill out Guiding Questions to help you organize your thoughts. You need to use the Library Databases for at least 2 of your sources: Go to KJH Library website Go to LWSD Databases Choose SIRS Researcher, ProQuest, or another database. If you are on a school computer, the sites will load automatically.

5 Presentation Requirements Your PowerPoint presentation must contain at least 8 slides, not including the title page and work cited page. Your slides should not have more than 50 words Your presentation needs to be between 6 – 10 minutes You must have a visual element in your presentation: a video clip, pictures, a map or graph, etc… You must have your full Works Cited as your final slide Your presentation must: Demonstrate the breadth and depth of your research Assert your own opinion. Propose a solution or an alternative, depending on your topic. Show an analysis of the facts, figures, and statistics you find and present EITHER propose a solution to a current environmental issue OR analyze an historical situation in the environment and propose an alternative that would have improved the outcome.
