1 Ganga River Basin Management Plan Presentation by the Canadian High Commission Ontario International Marketing Centre 23 September 2011, New Delhi

2 Where we are

3 Why Canada ?  A leader in scientific R&D, driving innovation and commercialization  Canada has 7% of the world's renewable fresh water  Ten provinces and three territories with water strategies and expertise in clean technology  In Toronto alone, 19 water-related research institutes, ranked #8 worldwide in number of citations per publication  More than 4000 patents in the water sector since 1869 – we’ve been working on this a long time!  Canada is 1 st in the G7 in terms of higher education research and development expenditures

4 Canadian Capabilities  73% of Canada’s electricity from clean sources (hydro, nuclear, wind, solar, waste-to-energy, biofuel).  Environment industry has 8,500 firms with exports worth between C$1.5 B and C$1.8 B annually.  Total annual revenues in the renewable sector hover around C$25 B.  Environmental industries in Canada: Ontario (43%), Quebec (19%), Alberta (15%), British Columbia (13%), Manitoba/Saskatchewan (5%), Atlantic Canada (5%).  Renewable energy (bioenergy, wind, hydrogen/fuel cells, hydro, solar, geothermal) also in provinces, territories.

5 Canada: Focused on Water  Canada Water Act provides for the management of Canadian water resources, including research and the planning and implementation of programs relating to the conservation, development and utilization of water resources  The Canada Water Act calls for joint consultation between the federal and provincial governments in matters relating to water resourcesCanada Water Act  Water industry = $7.8 B -- 44% of $17.9 billion Canadian environment industry  Experience managing largest cross-border water systems in the world – Great Lakes/St. Lawrence River System

6 Canadian Expertise in Water & Waste Water Technologies  Physical & chemical treatment (membrane filtration, sedimentation, oxidation and precipitation) including disinfection technologies  Biological treatment and bio-solids management systems for liquid & sludge treatment  Continuous water quality monitoring systems  Less energy intensive technologies and energy recovery systems  Expertise in design and production of specialized pumps, gates, valves, instrumentation, monitoring  Centres of Excellence

7 Ontario: Water background  Multifaceted customer base 39 % of the Canadian population – but also affects 153 M Major industrial sectors: agriculture, food, manufacturing  Management On Great Lakes (world’s largest fresh water source) Dealt with pollution and supply issues  Mechanisms Water Opportunities and Water Conservation Act Environmental Commissioner (independent watchdog) UN University Institute For Water, Environment and Health Ontario Clean Water Agency, Walkerton Clean Water Centre Numerous funds and programs for water innovation

8 Ontario: Our Asset Map Specialised Expertise 10 water Academic/Research Chairs 12 water University/College Programs 8,200 graduates in water programs Customer Solutions Major manufacturers Forestry, energy, mining companies Major Utilities and 444 municipalities Suppliers and Infrastructure 900+ companies Canada Water Network Ontario Water Works Association Public Sector, R&D $31.7 M, public funding over 10 years 25+ water-related research institutes Government Policy drivers Anchor Strengths UV disinfection Membrane technology Compact sewage treatment Water IT Water conservation Plant design, operation, optimization

9 Ontario Innovations  Global Leadership in: Mobile water filtration technology UV disinfection systems for industrial, commercial use  New Technologies such as: Automated microbiological testing of municipal water Non-destructive evaluation of pipe thickness, locate leaks Low cost self cleaning UV treatment for small systems  Emerging Technologies examples: Nano-engineered membranes with higher throughput Coupling water and communication technologies to increase efficiency and reduce operational costs

10 Southern Ontario Water Consortium  $52M Integrated Watershed Management project Integrating activity in water, wastewater, ecotoxicology, watershed management, sensor development, scientific analysis Unified data processing/preservation/exchange among researchers, companies and water authorities 8 universities and 100+ leading water researchers 70 companies: from local start-ups to international corporations 5 major municipal water authorities THIS APPROACH EXISTS UNIQUELY IN ONTARIO

11 Southern Ontario Water Consortium  Platform includes: Pilot scale wastewater plant to pilot, test new technologies Full scale wastewater plant for compliance testing and technology demonstration Mobile drinking water treatment pilot facilities Ecotoxicological sampling and analysis facilities Major lab for development of sensors for multiple environments Sensors to assess watershed health in rivers, streams, groundwater

12 A Living Laboratory Grand R. Sampling Packages Wastewater Treatment Plants Drinking Water Pilots Ecotoxicological Exposure Facilities 12 Full-scale WW

13 Key Partners  + 60 other companies and municipal water authorities  Universities of Waterloo, Guelph, Western Ontario, Toronto, McMaster, Wilfrid Laurier, Ryerson and Ontario Institute of Technology (have agreements with IITs)

14 Ontario and The Ganga River Basin  Collaborative Integrative Watershed Management Build Meta Project based on SOWC  Standards Development Development and validation of water standards  Water Reclamation and Re-use Test if technologies meet standards Assessment of sludge management practices  Safe Water Supply Integrated, cost-effective safe water solutions
