How Do I Become a Certificated Flight Instructor?
Privileges and Responsibilities Promote Safety Teach students towards a certificate –Sport –Recreational –Private –Instrument (with instrument rating on instructor certificate) –Commercial –CFI (requires 24 months and 200 hours as CFI) –Multi-engine (with multi on instructor cert. and 5 hours in model) –ATP (with ATP certificate) Endorse student pilots for solo privileges Provide additional training –Flight reviews –Transitions to new airplanes
Requirements and Training Requirements –Commercial Certificate –Instrument Rating –Knowledge Tests Aeronautical Knowledge Fundamentals of Instructing –Practical Test with FAA Inspector (first time only) or Examiner Training –Approximately: 30 hours of ground training 15 hours of flight training in a complex airplane –Redo Private and Commercial Certificate while teaching –Instructor acts as student –Spin training (e.g. Cessna 172)
Tips Before starting training: –Be proficient at commercial maneuvers –Be comfortable flying from right seat Get knowledge tests out of the way –Don’t need an instructor sign-off Read a lot Test is knowledge heavy –My practical test: Over 2 hours of ground Less than 1 hour of flight –Know material and know where to look up answers Be confident but not cocky –Inspector will ask trick questions or say incorrect things –Admit mistakes and look up what you’re unsure of
