Annual influx of tourist from North America, South America, the Caribbean and Europe. The country is covered for 90% with forest and therefore very suitable for ecotourism. One of the largest nature reserves of the world with an acreage of km2.

14 Mineral Potential The metallogenic map of Suriname shows various occurrences of minerals. Of major economic importance is the greenstone belt for primary gold and other deposits. The main metal bearing pegmatite bodies are found in north-east Suriname. Cassiterite, columbite-tantalite, beryl and amblygonite have been mined. Other base metal occurrences such as: Fe, Al, Au, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cr and other minerals.

15 The Greenstone Belt Suriname's gold deposits are part of the Guiana Shield, a geological formation Greenstone extending over 415,000 km2 of Venezuela, the Guianas, and Brazil. In Suriname, the Greenstone belt covers 24,000 km2 in the east of the country (Figure left).
