4 The History of online Radio  1993 US radio station WXYC became the first to streaming the station  In 1996, Edward Lyman created Sonicwave.com, the first licensed live, 24 hours Station  1996, Virgin Radio – first European radio station to broadcast its full program live on the internet In 1993 Carl Malmud Founder of Internet Multicasting first internet radio station – Internet Talk Radio. Each week the show interviewed a new computer expert.

5 The Royalties War.  October 1998 the US passed the Digital Millennium Copyright Act,  Performance royalties had to be paid for satellite radio and internet radio, in addition to publishing royalties.  In 2009 the US Congress, passed a bill that stated royalties will be charged to streaming net services based on revenue.

7 Online Radio Popularity  Can we compare the US stats to those of South Africa? By 2006, the revenue from online streaming music radio was US$500 million. In 2012 Internet-radio listening rose among the 13-to-35 age group, AM/FM radio, = 24 percent of music-listening declined 2 percentage points. In the 36-and-older age group, Internet radio = 13 percent listening, AM/FM radio dominated listening with 41 percent share.

8 How it Works  The server. Mixes audio, put it into astreamable format and sends it out, through the Internet sound waves  Through an embedded player program located on the respective station's website.  Audio data is continuously sent out.  It is then reassembled at the receiver or the listners devce.  Two options: 1) Softwere. 1) Softwere. 2) Radio Hosting Company. 2) Radio Hosting Company.

12 Online radio in SA  Most online stations that are popular in SA are terestrial stations broadaning into the online world.  There but still growing.  The growth of online will rely on data cots.  Time will tell if South Africa will warm up to this change.  Intro to Digital media soon to hit SA.
