2 O UR GOALS FOR TODAY : Gain some tools to help you narrow/focus your topic & generate search terms Know how to find books on your topic Pace Library Catalog Request books from another Pace campus Request books from ConnectNY if not at Pace Be able to find articles from 3 different databases Know where to go for information on Annotated Bibliographies and APA citation style

3 G ETTING O RGANIZED / F OCUSING T OPIC See “Organizing Your Research” Handout State your topic What questions do you want to ask/answer in your paper? What about that topic do you want to address through your research? What do you want to prove/disprove about your topic? From the questions you’re asking, generate some search terms You can also get search terms from your Catalog and Database searches Presentation will help with the “Recommended Databases” section; always feel free to ask me or another librarian for guidance!

5 Finding Books Using the Pace Library Catalog Start with a Keyword search using words from your chart For books, you want a BROAD search (in article searches you can be more specific) Use Subject Heading tags at the bottom of a relevant Library Catalog Record to find additional books Sample keyword search (gay or queer) and marriage and (law or legal* or legislat*) Leads to the following LC Subject Headings Same-sex marriage -- Law and legislation Civil unions -- Law and legislation Gay couples -- Legal status, laws, etc Gay rights

6 Requesting books from other locations Use your Pace Library barcode to request items from within the Pace Library system Takes 2 to 3 business days Also use your Pace Library barcode to request items from Connect NY libraries Takes 3 to 5 business days You will be emailed when you may pick up the item at the Birnbaum Circulation Desk

7 Finding Articles Using Pace Library Databases Use 3 or more databases that index publications in subject areas related to your research question(s) Limit to “peer reviewed” or “scholarly” or “academic” to ensure you find the necessary 5 scholarly sources All of you may use Multidisciplinary databases Multidisciplinary: Academic Search Premier, Research Library, JSTOR (backfiles—this stuff is 5 yrs old or older), LexisNexis You may also want to use databases devoted to a particular subject area relevant to your topic Business/Marketing: ABI/Inform, Business Source Premier Education: ERIC Law/Criminal Justice: Criminal Justice Abstracts, HeinOnline Health Sciences: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Nursing and Allied Health Source Psychology: PsycInfo Databases are subscription products available on campus or from home with your MyPace Portal username/password

8 S AMPLE D ATABASE S EARCHES Topic: Melanoma Suggestion: Narrow to relationship between tanning parlors and melanoma Possible thesis: Tanning booths should be illegal for minors because of the increase in youth and young adults with melanoma Database: Academic Search Premier Sample Search: (cancer or melanoma) AND tanning AND (bed* or parlor* or salon*) Topic: Racial Profiling Possible thesis: Racial profiling leads to wrongful arrests, creates biases, and leads to harassment. Database: Criminal Justice Abstracts Sample Search: “racial profiling” AND (arrest* OR harass* OR bias*) Topic: Immigration Possible thesis: Immigration reform is necessary to curb spending on illegal immigrants in the areas of health care, education, and other social services. Database: Research Library Sample Search: (“illegal immigra*” or “undocumented immigrant*” or aliens) AND (health* or education or “social services”)

9 F INDING F ULL -T EXT A RTICLES If you don’t see a link to HTML or PDF full text in a database search, click the icon to search all the library’s print and electronic subscriptions to see if we own the full text If we do not have full text, request through ILLiad (register using your Barcode number)

10 MLA C ITATION S TYLE MLA format is often used in the Humanities APA is often used in Social Sciences/Sciences; Chicago for History From library homepage, under “Library Services” click “How do I…?” then click “Cite Resources?” Bedford Handbook is an excellent resource for in-text citations, manuscript and citation format, etc.
