With a sense of urgency, [to] substantially increase the global share of renewable energy sources...“; but no timetables and targets n Commitment to go a step beyond the Johannesburg Action Plan by JREC („Johannesburg Renewable Energy Coalition“): more then 80 liked-minded countries supported the idea of adopting clear and ambitious time bound targets for the increase of renewable energies

6 Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety6 Other preparatory steps n National Advisory committee involves the big interest by national stakeholders including MPs, Länder, science, business, NGOs n Preparatory meetings foreseen in Denmark (September 2003 in Sonderborg), Brazil (October 2003), Kenya (November 2003), India (TBD Fall 2003), Berlin – organised by Cion (January 2004)

7 Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety7 Aims of the Conference n Defining the role of renewables in the context of sustainable development and balance this with the need to improve energy efficiency n Assessing best practices for the promotion of renewables including the concept of setting political targets for the future share of renewable energies and favourable framework conditions for progress in this field

8 Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety8 Aims of the Conference n Adressing international financial and other initiatives for the promotion of and investment in renewables in developing countries; this is of particular importance in relation to international financial institutions and the involvement of private capital n Individual or joint actions to promote RE by governments, organisations/institutions or enterprises; n International action plan, including monitoring, reviewing n Guidance for good policy: benchmarks, lessons learned from cases, goodgoivernance, n Agreeing on a long-term follow-up process for the implementation of the action plan

9 Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety9 Germany‘s Way n 2003 : 8 % of the electrictity consumption stems from renewable energies – 3 % from wind n 2003: up to 50 million t of CO 2 is reduced only by renewables n 130.000 jobs n Medium and long term targets: 20 % share by 2020 and 50 % share by 2050 n Key Policies and Measures: Renewable Energy Act Market-Incentives Programme R&D Information Campaign
