Writing a Mission Statement

Begin with the End in Mind A mission statement gives you something to achieve. It can be broken down into smaller, more achievable goals

Example 1 Mission Statement “I WILL… be a better daughter, sister, student, teammate, and friend by improving on my inferior qualities like organization, responsibility, and compassion. Short-term goal 1.I will write down important dates and information about events 2.I will follow through with things I say I will do 3.I will think about others problems from their perspective

Example 2 Mission Statement “I will live a healthy lifestyle” Goals 1.I will exercise 3 days a week 2.I will reduce my fast food from 3 days a week to 1 3.I will stop smoking my January 1 st

Example 3 Mission Statement “I will become more financially stable” Goals 1.I will get a part time job 1.I will apply for jobs 2.I will make better decisions about where I spend my money 3.I will put away 20% of my money in savings

Make Your Mission Work Count the cost – Opportunity cost- what do you have to give up versus what do you gain – If the goal means you are giving up something you love for something that is not that important  then don’t do it – Weigh the benefits to your goals Don’t make major commitments you know you won’t keep  it just hurts

Make Your Mission Work Put it in Pen – “A goal not written is only a wish” – A written goal carries more power – A written goal forces you to be specific

Make Your Mission Work Just Do It!!! – “Do. Do not. There is no try.” ~ Yoda Once you are fully committed to a goal, your likelihood of completing it increases – Those who are committed always find a way I WILL

Make Your Mission Work Use momentous moments – Certain dates have more power First day of school Report cards Birth days New Years Break- ups Use these days to start goals  they put you in the mood Character is the discipline to follow through with things long after the mood has passed

Make Your Mission Work Rope Up – Partner up with someone Friends Parents Teachers – You will accomplish more if you borrow strength from others

Today 1.Write down your Mission Statement 2.Write down 3 reachable goals for each part of your Mission Statement 3.List the: 1.Opportunity Cost- Cost/Benefit 2.Start date 3.Who will help you along the way
