APPENDIX: Gap Assessment: Results

Survey tool overview Developed survey to: Assess awareness Determine utility Understand needs Obtain recommendations Conducted one-on-one interviews Directly informed final toolkit 18 tools User feedback 14

Most recognized tools The ToolsAwareness (N=25) What they are saying… Human Resource Development through TB Control International Standards of Care Improving the Diagnosis and Treatment of Smear- Negative Pulmonary TB A Guide to Monitoring and Evaluation for Collaborative TB/HIV Activities 60% 92% 80% 92% “It has a great layout and is presented well.” “This tool presents steps that are easy to follow.” “It is particularly helpful because it is evidence- based.” “This is a nice booklet that gives basic principles.” 15

CONFIDENTIAL But awareness does not equal utility 16 Note: Achieving Functional HIV/AIDS Services (2002), Practical Guide to Succ. Advocacy (2007) and Management and Org. Sustainability Tool (2004) were not included in the graph above, as they each had negligible values (under 5)

Stated attributes of utilized materials 17

Coordinated, centralized information sharing “As it stands, dissemination of these documents are ad hoc and uncoordinated. I would like to see one site or location where I can get all of the documents.” - Hassan Sadiq, NTP Manager, Pakistan Online website housing all TB-control documents Coordinated, consistent marketing and communications plan Clear, concise executive summaries of publications Key Takeaways “A comprehensive source would be great, where each publication includes a short executive summary.” - Dr Keiko Inaba, WHO/S. Sudan 18

Online website organized by topic areas Search function (e.g. Google- powered search) Thematic-based approaches “I am thinking that arranging these documents based around themes would be very useful so we can find the documents that are relevant to a given topic and to our daily work.” - Dr. Jeremiah Chakaya, Chief Research Officer, Center for Respiratory Diseases Research and former NTP Manager, Kenya Key Takeaways How would you like materials to be organized? 19 Note: N= 25

Customization and interconnectivity “It would be great to have a tool that gives guidance on how all of these tools are supposed to work together.” - Felix Martin Salaniponi, Director, National TB Programme Secretariat, Malawi Amazon.com or iTunes style suggestion tool Ability to “create your own” tool Key Takeaways “I would like to have a system where people can self-select the documents they feel are relevant.” - Dr. Mtanios Saade, National TB Programme Manager, Lebanon “A good, useful toolkit would build around topic areas so we can see how various documents are supposed to interact with and compliment each other.” - Dr. Wilfred Nkhoma, Regional Focal Point, WHO/AFRO, Malawi 20

Improved dissemination of resources “An email alert would be good to advertise when new publications are out. We don't always have time to check what is new, so we aren't aware when new publications are published.” -Dr. Michael Nico Vonaitis, WHO Manila Officer for TB Control, Philippines Website registration and email alerts about new or updated publications Homepage featuring recently added or updated publications Key Takeaways 11 other respondents agreed 21

Varied formats “This tool needs to be created according to the target audience involved. Online and CD-ROM formats are fine, but we would need to print the documents for our staff regardless.” - Dr. P.K. Mitra, Regional Medical Coordinator, India Online toolkit with PDFs that can: Viewed online Downloaded Printed Mailed (as hard copies or CD-ROM) Key Takeaways 22 Note: N= 25
