Joint Research Activities © 2007 Some elements “Research Fleet management issues at European level” 9-10 October 2007, Brussels - ESF/COST Office, 149 Avenue Louise 2 nd MarinERA Infrastructure Workshop Jean-Marc Sinquin Ifremer/Brest Colin Devey Geomar/Kiel

Joint Research Activities © 2007 Some elements “Research Fleet management issues at European level” 9-10 October 2007, Brussels - ESF/COST Office, 149 Avenue Louise 2 nd MarinERA Infrastructure Workshop  Describe the objectives of the proposed activity (diagrams and schematic layouts can be added in order to illustrate the main technical features of the project).  Give a brief overview of the current international state-of-the-art and explain how the proposed JRA will represent a significant step forward, in particular in terms of developing essential technologies required to upgrade existing infrastructures or to move to the next generation of equipment, instrumentation, detectors, etc. Describe in what way the proposed activity is technologically innovative and not just duplicating a capability that already exists in Europe.  Whenever possible, suggest appropriate ways and parameters to monitor the success and impact of the activity.

Joint Research Activities © 2007 Some elements “Research Fleet management issues at European level” 9-10 October 2007, Brussels - ESF/COST Office, 149 Avenue Louise 2 nd MarinERA Infrastructure Workshop  ‘environment and mitigation’ - this could be as wide or as narrow as we want, on one hand seismic disturbance of marine mammals, but equally we could look at 'greening' of the OFEG fleet by reducing overboard discharges and emissions  developing a common set of ROV tools for the OFEG deep platforms facility  develop the next generation of ‘embarked software’, that could be shared within and outside OFEG

Joint Research Activities © 2007 Some elements “Research Fleet management issues at European level” 9-10 October 2007, Brussels - ESF/COST Office, 149 Avenue Louise 2 nd MarinERA Infrastructure Workshop  Case study : ‘embarked software – next generation’.  Sensors complexity   Data volume on disk   Complexity of data logging   Video formats   Time on board   Standardization  (Seadatanet, …)  Use and extend the existenting network (NERC, Geomar, AWI, Univ. Cambridge, CSIC, Univ. Amsterdam, …)

Joint Research Activities © 2007 Some elements “Research Fleet management issues at European level” 9-10 October 2007, Brussels - ESF/COST Office, 149 Avenue Louise 2 nd MarinERA Infrastructure Workshop  Main goals : The European scientific community could use such “the system” to: 1. draw greater benefit from marine exploration, 2. encourage the standardisation of processing methods between organisations, so that data can be better leveraged by existing networks, such as Seadatanet, 3. extend marine exploration to a larger number of disciplines.
