3 Social Studies Writing Assignment— WWI Soldier’s Life: Imagine you are a soldier in the first world war. Compose a journal detailing your experience in the war. Each journal entry should have a fake date and be at least one paragraph long (5-7 sentences). This will be an ongoing assignment. We will be doing several “WWI Soldier’s Life” journal entries. 3 rd /4 th —Entry #1 DUE Today in class 5 th /6 th —Entry #1 DUE Tomorrow in class

4 Weapons of War Grenades—small missiles that contain explosives or chemical agents and are thrown by hand or projected by a rifle.

5 Weapons of War Machine Guns—Dominated WWI; were set up on tripods and could fire over 600 rounds per minute; caused a massive amount of casualties.

7 Weapons of War Poison Gas—Chlorine gas grenades were thrown or fired; mustard gas was odorless and caused serious blisters externally and internally; both gases did a great deal of damage to soldiers and forced them to wear gas masks during the war.

9 Weapons of War Tanks—Introduced by the British in 1916, tanks were bullet proof and able to charge the enemy trenches. This was the first off road vehicle ever used in a war.

10 Weapons of War Trench Mortars—A short tube designed to fire at a steep angle; these mortar bombs fired straight down, which meant it could only land directly into the enemy’s trench.

13 WWI Welcome Brochure Create a “Welcome to the Great War” brochure for newly arriving soldiers. Include Info & Pictures about— the war: who, what, where, why trench warfare living conditions for the soldiers weapons being used This can be completed by hand OR digitally. IF you choose to do your brochure digitally, you MUST print at home. You CAN print small pictures to glue on your brochure. No more than 1 page of paper per student. Brochures will be due this Friday, Jan. 17 th
