4 How common is chlamydia?
One of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the UK. It’s passed on from one person to another through unprotected sex (sex without a condom).

5 Symptoms Around 70-80% of women with chlamydia don't notice any symptoms. If you do get signs and symptoms, these usually appear between one and three weeks after having unprotected sex with an infected person. The most common symptoms: Pain when urinating Discharge Pain in the lower abdomen Bleeding Pain in the testicles Fever, Nausea and pain during sex

6 Causes unprotected sex your genitals coming into
contact with your partner's genitals sharing sex toys  Chlamydia cannot be passed on through casual contact. Infected semen or vaginal fluid can cause conjunctivitis if it gets into someone’s eye.

7 Diagnosis and Treatment
Chlamydia tests on women can be done with a urine sample or swab test. Men will usually have a chlamydia test on a urine sample. Cervical screening tests (smear tests) and routine blood tests do not detect chlamydia. 8 Swelling up of the eye or urethra
Complications 40% untreated cases among women – PID (pubic inflammatory disease) PID can lead to permanent damage of reproductive organs. In pregnant women, the disease can be passed on to child from mother. For a newborn baby this can cause complications including: Pneumonia Pink eye Arthritis Skin lesions Swelling up of the eye or urethra

9 Prevention using a condom every time you have vaginal or anal sex
using a condom to cover the penis during oral sex using a dam (a piece of thin, soft plastic or latex) to cover the female genitals during oral sex or when rubbing female genitals together not sharing sex toys
