Social Deprivation Riddhi and Sean

Definition Social deprivation is the reduction or the prevention of culturally normal interaction between an individual and the rest of the society

Causes Low Income Households Family Conflict Young people that have been in care – Leave school without qualifications – Become unemployed – Become teenage parents – End up in prison (In the EU, 26 percent of prisoners have been in care as children) – End up homeless (Around a third of rough sleepers have been looked after by local authorities as children)

Effects/Impacts Socially deprived people are more likely to smoke, consume less healthy food, and have less time for leisure activities but have less access to hospitalization. They are more likely to die prematurely. Leads to crime Social, economic and political deprivation

Social Deprivation Index Based on Census report (2001), we computed a social deprivation index (SDI) by taking the average of proportions with the following features in each local urban area: 1) Unemployment 2) households earning low income 3) people with no schooling 4) one-person households 5) people never married 6) households living in sub-tenant quarters

What can be done to manage these issues The Government’s Approach The EU – Preventing Social Exclusion – Reintegrating – Getting the basics right – A more open policy-making process – A new emphasis on the link between economic and social policy – Positive results!

Examples - HIC Hong Kong We found areas with high social deprivation index (SDI) were in the North West borders and in the inner city.
