Research summary Nationally and internationally published 11 year olds can acquire theoretical knowledge Retain skills at least 6 months following training Theory better in 13 yr olds, no diff in practical skills Emphasis on ‘life-long’ learning No difference in teacher vs doctor led training Reduced anxieties Increased willingness to help

4 stage approach Stage 1Real time demonstration of skill Teacher performs CPR without explanation 2Repeat demonstration on manikin by teacher with dialogue discussing rationale for actions 3Repeat demonstration guided by pupils 4Independent demonstration of skill by each pupil until teacher feels they are competent

Viewing of materials / CPR video (10 mins)

Small group CPR session (30 mins)

Viewing of recovery position video (10 mins)

Small group recovery position session (15 mins)

Care of manikin and materials Face should be cleaned between each user Lungs should be changed between each session and discarded Manikins face should be thoroughly cleaned after each session Manikin should be handled with care Store in blue bag Replacement lungs via website www.qub.ac.uk/abcforlife

Changing lungs Demonstration by medical students Open chest by removing the ‘skin’ from the sides Remove manikins face Remove bottom of lungs from attachment Pull mouth piece off by dislodging the jaw Remove and dispose of lungs Attach new lungs to the jawbone and reinsert Fix lung to bottom of attachment Replace ‘skin’ and check lungs are inflating
