Science across the centuries

Trains started here

This is how they’ve progressed

What other scientific innovations can you think off? inventions

First TV

First computer

The first Apple computer

First cell phone

The wheel

To do In your books – draw a picture of what you think a typical inventor looks like. Write a few sentences to describe how they look and what their personality is like.

Any like this? Why?

Zhang Heng (25 -220 AD). Zhang Heng invented an early but efficient seismograph which could detect the direction of an earthquake up to 500 km (310 miles) away.

Sushruta (600 BC) is considered the father of surgery. Sushruta demonstrated knowledge of the circulation of blood and lymph and of the arteries. He connected obesity with heart disorders and diabetes, recommending physical activity in order to cure it. Sushruta laid the foundation for plastic surgery and related various methods for covering physical defects using skin grafts and other methods

Abu Al-Qasim (936-1013 AD) the father of modern surgery, his medical text, Kitab Al Tasrif, profoundly influenced Islamic and European surgical procedure

Marie Curie discovered radiation therapy could treat cancer.

Patricia Bath (1942-) This scientist, physician, and inventor is best known for her most well- known invention: the Laserphaco Probe. Her invention creates a less painful and more precise treatment of cataracts. She has been able to help restore the sight of those who had been blind for more than 30 years.

Mae Jemison Astronaught

To do In pairs you are going to prepare a 3 minute presentation on a scientist/inventor. You need to consider, what did they do, where are they from and what makes them special.
