Presentation on theme: "Portrait Photography How can you stage a photo that shows what you know to be true about you and a photo that shows what you know to be true about you?"— Presentation transcript:

Portrait Photography How can you stage a photo that shows what you know to be true about you and a photo that shows what you know to be true about you? How can you enhance it using PhotoShop? Where have you seen this before? Politics? Paparazzi? Ad Campaigns? By Steve McCurry

Politics Shepard Fairey Obama poster (above, left) can be given properly to photographer Mannie Garcia. He joins previously credited photographers David C. Turney (center) and Brooks Kraft (right)

What does this poster say? Meaning of colors Fashion Eyes Body language text

Is it okay to change the meaning or sway the purpose of a photo using PhotoShop? "I don't think any of us thought for an instant that it might be one of our photos. I just assumed it was from the campaign." "I'm flattered it's a real honor. A great honor that an image of mine was used this way.” Jim Young “ I would like to thank you for using your talent in support of my campaign. The political messages involved in your work have encouraged Americans to believe they can change the status-quo. Your images have a profound effect on people, whether seen in a gallery or on a stop sign. I am privileged to be a part of your artwork and proud to have your support. – Barack Obama, February 22, 2008”

PhotoShop Process How do you think this poster was created? What filters? Could you re create it? Extra credit if you can with a portrait photo that you have taken.

What do I do now? What can you add to the photo from the Internet to show more personality traits? Do not add text, you must use symbolism Your final photos must each be 8”x10” and saved as a.psd or.jpg labeled last name portrait1and last name portrait2. Ask others and myself for suggestions during the process. Look through your 9 photos and select the one that is “truly you” and the one that shows the “other’s view of you.” Edit each photo by adjusting the contrast, colors, and cropping. What do you need to add or emphasize to communicate your personality traits? How can you emphasize your most dominant quality?

How will I be graded? Remember that this project can be done with photos of you or a friend, or family member. If you do not come with photos taken outside of school you will automatically lose points and can only earn a 70%. You will be required to take your photos in the classroom. We will have have a peer and instructor Critique before final grading. Open both photographs on your computer screen. Leave the Critique sheet in front of your computer. Each person will be leaving comments and suggestions and writing what they think your personality traits are from seeing the photographs.
