1 Learning Goal: To define and analyse the term sustainable development.

2 Which will last longer?

3 Sustainable- Key Ideas
Keeps going into the future Allows us to live well today Takes into account profits Takes into account people Allows people to live well in the future Takes into account the planet

4 Sustainability = Good for People, Planet, and Profit Environment
The MORE each component overlaps, the more likely the solution is sustainable Environment Society Economy

5 Check your Knowledge: Create your own definition of sustainability.
Extension: Add examples of how your daily activities are sustainable. People – services promote fairness, tolerance, and community participation/leadership Planet - services are well designed and built, include the natural environment, and are considerate of nature. Profit – services take into account full-cost analysis of activity and promote the local economy Fair for everyone - including people, planet, and profits, now and in the future

6 Sustainability Sustainability is making sure the needs of the current population are met without compromising the needs of future generations. How similar is this definition to your own? Add some detail to your own definition!

7 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Sustainable Development refers to people taking resources from nature with minimal disturbance to the environment. Sustainable development provides people with resources needed today without threatening resources need for the future.

8

9 Clear-Cutting Most common method for harvesting trees (93% of Canada’s forest area harvested is clear-cut). +’s – resembles natural disturbances like fire, wind, floods, and insects, allowing natural regeneration. -’s – leads to biodiversity loss.

10 Activity: Idea Sorting
Create a 3-Column t-chart on the chart paper provided. Label as listed below: Cut out and sort each piece of EVIDENCE in the correct category. Decide whether current deforestation practices are sustainable. Explain why or why not using the EVIDENCE STATEMENTS to support your answer. If sustainable: What EVIDENCE shows benefits to people, profit, and planet. If unsustainable: What EVIDENCE must be addressed to improve sustainability and reduce negative impacts to people, profit, and/or planet. Causes Effects Solutions

26 Sustainable development thus means:
Resources can be used over and over. Not just resources are preserved but so are people’s jobs. Thus employment also has to do with sustainability.

27 The Earth is made up of four major spheres
Hydrosphere Atmosphere Lithosphere

28 The Earth is made up of four major spheres
Hydrosphere Atmosphere Lithosphere Bio- sphere Biosphere = Where the Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere come together life is created.

29 The Earth is made up of four major spheres
Lithosphere Atmosphere Hydrosphere Biosphere = Where these three spheres interact (Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere) life is created. Bio- sphere

30 Lithosphere Atmosphere Hydrosphere Biosphere = Where these three spheres interact (Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere) life is created. Non Living Non Living Bio- sphere Non Living

31 Lithosphere Atmosphere Hydrosphere Biosphere = Where these three spheres interact (Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere) life is created. Non Living Non Living Bio- sphere Non Living The biosphere starts at the bottom of the ocean floor and reaches to the upper limits of the lower atmosphere where there is life. Sustainable development is very important when it comes to these 4 spheres.

32 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
It does not endanger the biosphere or ecosystems (the system formed by the interaction of all living things in an environment with one another as well as with the non-living elements climate, water, and soil) that support life. Lithosphere Atmosphere Hydrosphere Bio- sphere Non Living Living

33 Other things about Sustainable Development
In the past several decades, sustainable development has become a worldwide challenge. The United Nations report Our Common Future (1987) developed a vision of an Earth that meets the needs of present and future generations. The report mentions that all humans are stewards and responsible for the well being of the Earth. Stewardship refers to humans’ responsible attitude toward caring for the Earth.

35 “This we know. The Earth does not belong to [humans]
“This we know. The Earth does not belong to [humans]. [Humans] belongs to the Earth… [Humans] did not weave the web of life; [they are] merely a strand in it. Whatever [we] does to the web, [we do] to [ourself].” - Chief Seattle, Squamish, 1854 From your understanding of sustainable development, share with a partner your understanding and meaning of the above quotation. Be prepared to discuss your ideas with the class.

36 Summarise what you have learned in today’s lesson in:
1. Five Sentences The... My... I... If... Also… 2. Three Words Firstly... Next... So... Lastly... After… I think/believe… In order to… For example… For instance… Lastly… 3. One Word Although... Therefore… Interestingly… However… In summary… In addition… My opinion… My first point… Moreover… Furthermore… On the one hand/on the other hand… An important point… After careful consideration… Similarly… Consequently… Nevertheless… Having considered both sides… The evidence suggests… In conclusion… It could be considered… I advocate this… Contrary to… It could be argued… Conversely… Despite this… In comparison… Use complex sentences appropriately. Vary sentence length and word order to keep the reader interested. Openers Pyramid

37 Homework Read the article, Will saving a B.C. forest save us money?
Highlight all examples that demonstrate the value of forests (e.g. animal habitat). Decide whether the points you highlighted represent the forest’s market value or non-market value—it’s ‘natural capital’. Write a letter to Stephen Harper arguing for Canada’s adoption of managing forests based on its ‘natural capital’ not just its market value.
