2 Great Britain and the United Kingdom Great Britain is the official name given to the two kingdoms of England and Scotland, and the principality of Wales. It is an island in the western coast of Europe, comprising the main territory of the United Kingdom. Great Britain is made up of: England - The capital is London. Scotland - The capital is Edinburgh. Wales - The capital is Cardiff. The United Kingdom (UK) includes Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

4 The Political System The United Kingdom is a union of four constituent countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. It is governed by a parliamentary system with its seat of government in London, the capital, and is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state. 8 The Commonwealth of Nations The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 54 independent sovereign states, most of which are former British colonies. no one government in the commonwealth, British or otherwise, exercises power over the others, as in a political union. Rather, the relationship is one of an international organization through which countries with different social, political, and economic backgrounds are regarded as equal in status, and co-operate within a framework of common values and goals. the symbol of this free association is Queen Elizabeth II, known for this purpose as Head of the Commonwealth.

10 The Commonwealth Secretary- General The Commonwealth Secretary-General is the head of the Commonwealth Secretariat, the central body which has served the Commonwealth of Nations since its establishment in 1965, and responsible for representing the Commonwealth publicly. The Commonwealth Secretary-General should not be confused with the Head of the Commonwealth, who is Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Kamalesh Sharma, from India, is the present Commonwealth Secretary-General.
