Homework Learning Package 7. If you are unsure of any of these questions, ASK ME FOR HELP Due Thursday 9 nd October No homework = Friday afternoon detention with Miss Tagore – Mityrae, Deneal (can’t make it? – parental note to Miss Tagore explaining why by tomorrow) Incomplete or poorly done homework results in Study support (R212) This afternoon at 3:40pm

Key words Spirometer Lung capacity Resuscitation Tidal volume Vital capacity

Aims from specification (h) describe the use of a spirometer and peak flow meter to measure tidal volume, vital capacity, forced expiratory volume per second (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR); (i)analyse and interpret data from a spirometer; (j) describe the possible causes of respiratory arrest; (k) explain how expired air resuscitation should be carried out on adults, children and babies in order to maintain blood oxygen concentration.

Tidal Volume and Spirometers

Model answer

(h) describe the use of a spirometer and peak flow meter to measure tidal volume, vital capacity, forced expiratory volume per second (FEV1) and peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR);

Spirometer trace: Tidal Volume Why does the trace gradually decrease? Think about the CO 2 absorber (soda lime)

(i) analyse and interpret data from a spirometer;

Is this person breathing normally? Explain why!

Peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) The peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) is a person's maximum speed of expiration, as measured with a peak flow meter. A small, hand-held device used to monitor a person's ability to breathe out air. It measures the airflow through the bronchi and thus the degree of obstruction in the airways.

(j) describe the possible causes of respiratory arrest; What is respiratory arrest? http://www.today.com/video/today/5595350 2#55953502 http://www.today.com/video/today/5595350 2#55953502 Use page 54 to write causes of respiratory arrest.

(k) explain how expired air resuscitation should be carried out on adults, children and babies in order to maintain blood oxygen concentration. Read the procedure for respired air resuscitation on page 54 &55 Complete the following table to compare respired air resuscitation for an adult, child, infant. Feature of Respired Air Resuscitation AdultChildInfant Body positionOn back Head positionSlight tilt Rescue breathsYES Breathing rateEvery 5 seconds
