8 Summer 1 (to May half term) ‘Growth and Growing’ topic Develop care and concern for living things and for the environment Planting seeds and understand what they need to grow and flourish Looking at the lifecycles of different animals Talking about how we have changed since we were babies RE – The Mustard Seed

9 What can you do? ‘Growth and Growing’ topic Look at baby photographs with your child and talk about how they have changed. What can they do now that they could not when they were a baby? Look at different plants and flowers when you are out and about. Talk about how they grow and how you can help to look after them. Allow children to help with gardening and also with recycling.

10 Spring 2 (to Summer holiday) ‘Transport’ and ‘People who help us’ topic Looking at different types of transport Comparing transport ‘now’ and ‘then’ Talking about journeys that we have been on RE – The Good Samaritan TRANSITION PROJECT – People who help us stay safe/People who help us at home Continued in Reception – People who help us at school

11 What can you do? ‘Transport’ topic Look at holiday photos and talk about journeys that your child has been on Talk about the different types of transport that you see whilst you are out and about Talk about safety (road, train, water) with your child

12 ‘ People who help us’ topic Point out ‘People who help us’ when you are out and about (and their vehicles) Talk with your child about ‘Stranger Danger’ and ‘Safe Strangers’ Start to talk with your child about their move to Reception…be positive! What can you do?

14 Transition to Reception ‘ What we will do Reception children will visit the setting to talk to the children about how wonderful Reception is Reception staff will visit Nursery to get to know the children and to help the children to become familiar with them Begin some Reception routines (snack time, assembly) Visits to new classrooms with peers Stay for dinner Individualised support for children not attending our setting

15 Transition to Reception What can you do? Talk about moving to Reception in a POSITIVE way Address your child’s anxieties, share these with staff members Talk about school and Reception during the summer break. Try on uniform, look at book bag, countdown the days until school starts. Work on targets…

16 Literacy - Writing MUSTs Pencil grip (tripod) Name writing Give meanings to the marks they make Track from left to right, and top to bottom Extension: use familiar letters to represent meaning Extension: hear and represent initial sounds correctly

17 Literacy - Reading MUSTs Hold book correctly and turn pages one at a time Talk about the pictures (use these to tell the story) Know that print carries meaning, and is read from left to right (track with finger) Talk about story characters, settings, events Extension: recognise the initial sounds of some words Extension: recognise some simple words

18 Mathematical Development - Numbers MUST Recognise numbers 0-5, then 10 Count at least 6 objects using accurate 1:1 correspondence Find one more/less, use the language of more/less Extension: know 1 more/less Extension: count two groups to find total (simple addition) Extension: write some numbers

19 Mathematical Development – Shape, Space and Measures MUST Compare sizes (long, short, bigger, smaller) Follow and use positional language 2D shape names (and 3D) Extension: describe properties of shapes
