MUSTANGS SOCCER ELEANOR ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL ELEANOR ROOSEVLET HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER HANDBOOK

SOCCER MUSTANG Expectations Be the best you can be ACADEMICALLY at all times. Be the best you can be ATHLETICALLY at all times. Be the best PERSON you can possibly be. You know the difference between right and wrong. Do what is right. Be totally committed and loyal to the philosophy and goals of our total program. Uphold the Pride and Tradition of being an Eleanor Roosevelt High School Soccer player. You are Mustang Soccer. It is what you are.

MUSTANGS SOCCER ELEANOR ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL The purpose of this interscholastic athletic program is to provide student-athletes with an enjoyable and challenging athletic environment which emphasizes the attainment of both physical skills and strong character development. Purpose

SOCCER MUSTANG PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY To Produce a quality product that we, as educators, can point to with pride, where we have provided these young men with the tools necessary to be successful in all things in life. As a coaching staff, we should be a force for good in the life of a student that is strong, consistent, and stable. Former players should be able to look back on their education with a feeling of tremendous pride, appreciation, and accomplishment.

SOCCER MUSTANG PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY The student athletes that participate in this program are at this school to get an education. I firmly believe that the experiences these young men will have through participating in this soccer program are as vital to their overall education as any class they will take. But, school is first. Their academics are the priority in this program and school.

SOCCER MUSTANG PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY Winning is important to all involved in this program, but it is not the primary focus. I want these young men to become good, productive individuals in society. Strong men of character who will place their families and integrity before getting ahead in the world. -Coach VanderWeerd

SOCCER MUSTANG Guidelines & Policies As a general rule, all players are to conduct themselves with class and dignity, both on and off the field. Their behavior is a direct reflection of our school and soccer program. Any action that will embarrass them, their team, school, or parents is an action that will not be taken.

SOCCER MUSTANG Guidelines & Policies All players in this program will recognize and respect the authority of all coaches or they will not be a part of the team. All players are expected to be present and on time to practice.  Any player who misses practice without notifying me or one of the coaches in person or by phone WILL NOT PLAY in the next game. In the case of an emergency not foreseen, only the parent/guardian may excuse a player's absence. If this were to happen, the player will not start.

SOCCER MUSTANG Guidelines & Policies No player will ever be ridiculed by another player either in the dressing room or on the field. The Freshmen and J. V. players will be respected by the Varsity team, and vice versa. All players must have regard for the equipment. The floor will be free of trash and equipment that does not belong there. A coach must handle all equipment changes. No students, including managers, will be in the coaches' office without an invitation, unless he is making a request. In that case, my door is always open.

SOCCER MUSTANG Guidelines & Policies Treat all teachers, administrators, and support staff members with respect and common courtesy. The use of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco will not be tolerated. The use of these products is damaging to your health and to the image of our soccer team. The possession or use of drugs or alcohol during school and/or soccer activities will result in dismissal from the team.

SOCCER MUSTANG Student-Athlete Code of Conduct Pursuing Victory with Honor Six Pillars of Character 1.Trustworthiness 2.Respect 3.Responsibility 4.Fairness 5.Caring 6.Citizenship

SOCCER MUSTANG Student-Athlete Code of Conduct Interscholastic athletic competition should demonstrate high standards of ethics and sportsmanship and promote the development of good character and other important life skills. The highest potential of sports is achieved when participants are committed to pursuing victory with honor according to six core principles: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and good citizenship (the "Six Pillars of Character sm "). This Code applies to all student- athletes involved in interscholastic sports in California.

SOCCER MUSTANG Player & Parent Concerns From time to time, you may have a concern about a specific aspect of your participation in our program. If you or your parent feels that a conference is needed to clear up your concern, one will be set up as soon as possible. All questions about playing time should be asked by the player. Parents please do not ask a coach about playing time.

SOCCER MUSTANG Player & Parent Concerns To help solve your concern efficiently, you should follow these steps:  Speak with the coach that your concern involves. Request a conference if necessary.  Speak with Coach VanderWeerd. Request a conference if necessary. The vast majority of concerns will be worked out at this level.  If you are not satisfied with what transpires at the above levels, the next step would be to speak with the Athletic Director. If all else fails, the Principal should be contacted.

SOCCER MUSTANG Demands of the Game The game of soccer is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world. To ensure that your sons are physically prepared for competition at the high school level, they will participate in a rigorous physical training program.

SOCCER MUSTANG Skills and Abilities the Coaches are looking for:  Work Ethic and Character  Ability to Work in a Team Environment  Tactical Knowledge of the Game  Individual Ball Skill  Speed

SOCCER MUSTANG Lettering Policy To letter in SOCCER at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, a student athlete must participate in at least 4 games at the Varsity Level. A student athlete must also finish the season in good standing and maintain a 2.0 GPA throughout the season.

SOCCER MUSTANG SPAGHETTI NIGHTS The night before every game each team will have a team meal, or what I like to call “spaghetti night”, at a player’s house. Parents this is voluntary. I hope that every parent will consider hosting a spaghetti night. These team meals are great opportunities for building team camaraderie. Each player that attends a spaghetti night is expected to behave with the utmost respect for the host and their home. Any problems need to be reported to Coach VanderWeerd ASAP.

SOCCER MUSTANG UNIFORMS The school does not have the funds to buy us new Uniforms. Choices for Uniforms  Use 7 yr old original Uni’s  Fundraise for New Team Uni’s  New Players buy uniforms to match last yrs.

SOCCER MUSTANG District Athletic Rules for $$ All players participating in a school athletic program-  Can not be required to purchase anything in order to participate in the program  Can not be required to fundraise  IF THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM DOES FUNDRAISE FOR EQUIPMENT, UNIFORMS ETC… A PLAYER WHO DOES NOT FUNDRAISE OR DOES NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY FUNDRAISING ACTIVITY MUST STILL BE GIVEN ACCESS TO USE ALL THE EQUIPMENT, UNIFORMS ETC… THAT THE TEAM PURCHASED WITH OUT ANY CONSEQUENCE.

SOCCER MUSTANG UNIFORMS AGAIN The program will only purchase new uniforms when we raise enough money to pay for those uniforms. All items purchased with funds raised by the team are the property of Eleanor Roosevelt High School Boys Soccer.

SOCCER MUSTANG UNIFORMS If the program decides to fundraise for new uniforms the Varsity Team will use the new uniforms. If enough $$$ is raised then JV will get the second set and Frosh will get the third. Only if enough $$$ is raised.

SOCCER MUSTANG Still… UNIFORMS IF there is a majority vote we will have the players purchase their own uniforms and gear. Anything the players purchase they keep.

SOCCER MUSTANG eScrip What is it? eScrip is an online registry for school program fundraising. Registration is Free. Every registered participant simply does their normal shopping/eating out and the soccer program gets a percentage of each purchase. To register you must use a Vons Club Card or a Debit/Credit Card.

SOCCER MUSTANG eScrip Each player should try to get 5-10 people to register. The more people registered the better. This fundraiser is all about getting people to register to support our program. Example: 100 people who spend $200 dollars a month at Vons on groceries. The program gets 5% of each purchase. $200 x 5% = $10 $10 x 100 people = $1000 per month!!!

SOCCER MUSTANG eScrip We have 65 soccer players in this program. IF each team member gets just 5 people to sign up we will have 250 eScrip supporters.
