iAcademy What Is Input? Input is any data and instructions entered into the memory of a computer

iAcademy What Is Input? Instructions can be entered into the computer in the form of programs, commands, and user responses A program is a series of related instructions that tells a computer what tasks to perform and how to perform them Programs respond to commands that a user issues. A command is an instruction that causes a program to perform a specific action A user response is an instruction a user issues by replying to a question displayed by a program

iAcademy What Are Input Devices An input device is any hardware component that allows users to enter data and instructions into a computer

iAcademy What Are Input Devices http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3p5Z_qGHY0

iAcademy The Keyboard A keyboard is an input device that contains keys users press to enter data and instructions into a computer

iAcademy QWERTY Keyboard The keys originally were arranged to reduce the frequency of key jams on old mechanical typewriters. Called a QWERTY keyboard, the first letter on the top alphabetic line spell QWERTY. A Dvorak keyboard, by contrast, places frequently typed letters in the middle of the typing area. Despite the Dvorak keyboard’s logical design, most people and computers use a QWERTY keyboard.

iAcademy The Keyboard The insertion point, also known as the cursor, is a symbol on the screen that indicates where the next character you type will appear

iAcademy The Keyboard USB port Keyboard port Wired Keyboards Bluetooth IrDA Wireless Keyboards

iAcademy The Keyboard An ergonomic keyboard has a design that reduces the chance of wrist and hand injuries Ergonomics incorporates comfort, efficiency, and safety into the design of the workplace

iAcademy The Keyboard Keyboards on mobile devices typically are smaller and/or have fewer keys Some phones have predictive text input, which saves time when entering text using the phone’s keypad

iAcademy Pointing Devices

iAcademy Mouse A mouse is a pointing device that fits under the palm of your hand comfortably – Most widely used pointing device on desktop computers A mouse can be wired or wireless

iAcademy Mouse

iAcademy Mouse

iAcademy Other Pointing Devices Trackball A trackball is a stationary pointing device with a ball on its top or side Touchpad A touchpad is a small, flat, rectangular pointing device that is sensitive to pressure and motion Pointing Stick A pointing stick is a pressure- sensitive pointing device shaped like a pencil eraser that is positioned between keys on a keyboard

iAcademy Other Pointing Devices http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4CxVrQTsSo

iAcademy Touch Screens and Touch-Sensitive Pads A touch screen is a touch-sensitive display device

iAcademy Touch Screens and Touch-Sensitive Pads http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMfIcJmrxzg

iAcademy Touch Screens and Touch-Sensitive Pads A kiosk is a freestanding computer, usually includes a touch screen. For example, travelers use kiosks in airports to print tickets ordered online and in hotels for easy check in and check out. To allow easy access of your bank account from a car, many ATMs have touch screens.

iAcademy Touch Screens and Touch-Sensitive Pads Portable media players typically have a touch-sensitive pad, which is an input device that enables users to scroll through and play music, view pictures, watch videos or movies, adjust volume, and/or customize settings. Touch-sensitive pads typically contain buttons and/or wheels that are operated with a thumb or finger. For example, users rotate a Click Wheel to browse through the portable media player’s song, picture, or movie lists and press the Click Wheel’s buttons to play or pause media, display a menu, and perform other actions

iAcademy Pen Input With pen input, you touch a stylus or digital pen on a flat surface to write, draw, or make selections Handwriting recognition software is a program that translates the handwritten letters and symbols created on the screen with the stylus or pen into characters that the computer or devices can process

iAcademy Pen Input To capture a handwritten signature, a user write his or her name on a signature capture pad with a stylus or pen that is attached to the device. To use pen input on a computer that does not have a touch screen, you can attach a graphics tablet to the computer.

iAcademy Other Input for Smart Phones

iAcademy Game Controllers Video games and computer games use a game controller as the input device that directs movements and actions of on-screen objects Gamepads Joysticks and Wheels Light guns Dance pads Motion- sensing controllers

Digital Cameras A digital camera is a mobile device that allows users to take pictures and store them digitally Studio cameras - a stationary camera used for professional studio work. Field cameras - a portable camera that has many lenses and other attachments Point-and-shoot camera - a much more affordable and lightweight for the home or small business user

iAcademy Digital Cameras

iAcademy Digital Cameras Two factors affect the quality of digital camera photos: Resolution is the number of horizontal and vertical pictures in a display device A pixel is the smallest element in an electronic display The actual photographed resolution is known as optical resolution Resolution Each pixel consists of one or more bits of data The more bits used to represent a pixel, the more colors and shades of gray that can be represented Number of bits stored in each pixel

iAcademy Voice Input Voice input is the process of entering input by speaking into a microphone Voice recognition is the computer’s capability of distinguishing spoken words

iAcademy Voice Input http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuMX97a8U64

iAcademy Voice Input http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3VZnyKViC4

iAcademy Voice Input Audio input is the process of entering any sound into the computer 40 SpeechMusicSound Effects

iAcademy Voice Input Music production software allows users to record, compose, mix, and edit music and sounds

iAcademy Video Input Video input is the process of capturing full-motion images and storing them on a computer’s storage medium Record video on a digital video (DV) camera or use a video capture card to convert analog signals to digital Connect the camera to a port on the system unitTransfer video and images

iAcademy Video Input

iAcademy Video Input A Web cam is a type of digital video camera that enables a user to: Capture video and still images Send e-mail messages with video attachments Add live images to instant messages Broadcast live images over the Internet Make video telephone calls

iAcademy Video Input A video conference is a meeting between two or more geographically separated people who use a network or the Internet to transmit audio and video data To participate in a video conference using a computer, you need video conferencing software or use a video conferencing Web application, along with a microphone, speakers, and a video camera attached to or built in to a computer.

iAcademy Video Input As you speak, members of the meeting hear your voice on their speakers. Any image in front of the video camera, such as a person’s face, appears in a window on each participant’s screen. A whiteboard is another window on the screen that displays notes and drawings simultaneously on all participants’ screens. This window provides multiple users with an area on which they can write or draw.

iAcademy Any Questions?

iAcademy Assessment 1 Write a technical review on the general technology and existing specific products most closely related to information technology. This is an individual assignment and must be prepared by you alone, although you should be discussing your findings with your classmates.

iAcademy Assessment 1 The report should consist of a 5 to 7 page summary by researching the following information: – What are the commercial applications of this technology? Are there any existing products available? List, explain, and summarize what is on the market.

iAcademy Assessment 1 – How does the underlying technology work? For example, what are the CPU used? What algorithms are out there? – What are the building blocks for implementing the technology? Are both hardware and software required? Is any special hardware available? What about embedded processor platforms? Wireless networks? Power considerations? Detail in the assessment paper.
